The Bright Star Restaurant, a family-owned establishment in Bessemer, Alabama, is celebrating a remarkable 119-year legacy. Renowned for its comforting blend of Greek and Southern cuisine, the restaurant has become a cherished staple in the community since its inception in 1907. Owner Andreas Anastassakis spoke about the restaurant’s history and enduring connections to its patrons, highlighting its distinctive menu and authentic decor from 1915.
Originally established by Tom Bonduris, an immigrant from Peleta, Greece, the Bright Star has undergone significant changes, including relocations within Bessemer before finding its current home in 1915. Anastassakis recounted that the restaurant has remained in the family for generations, tracing the lineage of ownership and management over the decades. In 1925, as Bonduris contemplated retirement, he endeavoured to keep his culinary legacy alive by bringing four nephews from Greece to help run the restaurant.
The tradition continued through the years, with key figures like Jimmy Koikos, one of Bonduris’s nephews, stepping in to ensure the restaurant maintained its appeal. Throughout the years, the establishment retained its family-oriented atmosphere, welcoming the next generation into its fold. In 2000, Stacey Koikos joined, followed by Anastassakis in 2010, solidifying the restaurant’s commitment to its heritage.
Recently, the Bright Star Restaurant garnered attention when it was featured in Food Network’s list of the best nostalgic dining experiences in the United States. The honour recognised not only the restaurant’s unique ambiance but also its standout dishes, such as ham steak and pineapple pie. Anastassakis expressed the significance of this recognition, emphasising the hard work of the family throughout the years.
Walking through the doors of the Bright Star, guests are instantly transported to a bygone era. Anastassakis noted that many visitors comment on the nostalgic charm, with some stating that the restaurant epitomises what dining establishments should look like. The main dining area has been preserved to reflect its original design, featuring murals painted in 1915 and the historic tiled flooring crafted over a century ago.
The menu at the Bright Star is a testament to its long-standing dedication to culinary consistency. Signature dishes such as Fried Snapper Almondine and Greek-style Tenderloin have remained central to the restaurant’s offerings for decades, catering to loyal patrons who return for their all-time favourites. Anastassakis mentioned that these beloved items often don’t require a glance at the menu; regular customers already know what they desire.
Continuing with its tradition of quality, the restaurant sources its snapper from Greg Abrams Seafood in Panama City, Florida, ensuring that freshness remains a priority. In addition to standard preparations, the menu includes unique options like Greek Snapper and Broiled Snapper Throats, illustrating the restaurant’s commitment to variety while honouring its roots.
Amidst the warmth of its familiar atmosphere, the Bright Star Restaurant has witnessed numerous memorable moments. Anastassakis shared an anecdote about a recent guest who travelled all the way from Chicago just to dine at the restaurant while visiting family. Although he has yet to identify a successor, he remains optimistic that someone will emerge to carry forward the rich tradition that has kept the Bright Star thriving for over a century.
