Minn. Man Who Set Fire to Ex-Girlfriend’s Home Learns Fate

A 23-year-old man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after admitting to lighting a fire at his ex-girlfriend’s townhouse, which resulted in personal injury. Abdirahman Abdi Abdullahi, of Minnesota, pleaded guilty to the charges, according to an announcement made by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Minnesota earlier this week.

The incident in question occurred on 31 May 2024, when Abdullahi set fire to the townhouse while four children and an adult male were inside. Thankfully, all occupants managed to escape, with the exception of a nine-month-old baby, who was later rescued by firefighters and taken to hospital for evaluation.

Details of the case revealed that Abdullahi was under probation at the time of the arson for previously breaching a restraining order, which barred him from communicating with his ex-girlfriend. Just two days prior to the arson, Abdullahi sent a threatening text message to the woman, stating ominously, “when I see u I’m smoke u.” On the same day, he had also confronted her in person, uttering threats to kill her.

On the day of the fire, Abdullahi is reported to have rented a car and filled a gas can with petrol at a nearby service station. He parked the vehicle in a lot away from the townhouse, approached the property carrying the gas can along with a plastic bag filled with clothing, and ignited the material at the entrance.

The subsequent blaze caused severe damage to the townhouse and neighbouring properties. The flames were intense enough to collapse the garage roof and melt the front doorknob, a fact noted during the fire investigation, which traced the origin of the fire to Abdullahi’s actions.

During the sentencing hearing, prosecutors highlighted the calculated nature of Abdullahi’s preparation for the crime. The presiding judge remarked on the seriousness of Abdullahi’s premeditation, describing his actions as “calculated” and “cold,” underscoring the risks he posed to the lives of those in the residence.

While his ex-girlfriend was not present during the devastating incident, the presence of the adult male and the four children added a tragic element to the case. Fortunately, three of the children managed to escape shortly after the fire ignited, while the rescuers bravely entered the burning building to retrieve the infant, who was still trapped inside.

Abdullahi’s legal troubles are compounded by his history of violent behaviour. The court proceedings have raised concerns about his propensity for violence and disregard for the safety of others, particularly in the context of domestic violence.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of unchecked aggression and the severe impact of domestic violence situations on families and communities.

As the community comes to terms with the events that transpired, authorities continue to stress the importance of reporting threats and seeking help when faced with domestic abuse.
