John Cena, the renowned WWE star and actor, has recently opened up about his unexpected diagnosis of Demodex blepharitis, a condition he was previously unaware of. The 49-year-old athlete and entertainer, known for his catchphrase “You Can’t See Me,” shared his health journey in an interview, highlighting the need for regular eye examinations.

Cena started noticing troubling symptoms, including redness and itchiness in his eyes, as well as occasional crustiness upon waking. Initially, he dismissed these issues as mere signs of ageing, given his approaching fifth decade of life. “I just figured it was par for the course,” he admitted, noting that he would attribute his discomfort to factors like bright lights or excessive screen time.

Despite his reluctance to seek medical advice, Cena realised the necessity of an eye appointment, especially with the demands of being in front of cameras frequently. “It’s important for my wellbeing,” he remarked. This prompted him to finally schedule a visit to an eye doctor, a decision he now encourages others to consider. “Regular eye checkups are as crucial as dental care,” he stated emphatically.
During his eye examination, Cena received his diagnosis of Demodex blepharitis, a condition resulting from an infestation of Demodex mites, tiny parasites that inhabit hair follicles. The Cleveland Clinic notes that symptoms can include itchy eyes, puffy eyelids, and flaky crusts along the eyelashes. Following his diagnosis, Cena was prescribed XDEMVY, an FDA-approved treatment from Tarsus Pharmaceuticals. He reported immediate improvement, stating, “All that stuff went away.”
Reflecting on his experience, Cena viewed the eye examination as a vital learning opportunity. He expressed gratitude for finally seeking professional help rather than attempting to self-diagnose. “I’ve been very lax on seeing a professional eye doctor,” he acknowledged.
He discovered that Demodex blepharitis is relatively common yet frequently underdiagnosed, affecting an estimated 25 million Americans alone. “That figure only accounts for those who have sought medical advice,” he emphasised. Cena described visiting an eye specialist as an important initial step in addressing health issues.
Through his partnership with Tarsus, Cena hopes to raise awareness about Demodex blepharitis and the availability of effective treatments like XDEMVY. He encouraged anyone experiencing similar symptoms to consult a medical professional, insisting that “there is hope and promise” for those diagnosed with the condition.
Cena also took the opportunity to reflect on the evolution of his health priorities. Once focused solely on physical strength during his wrestling career, he has since shifted his perspective toward overall wellbeing, encompassing physical, mental, and spiritual health. “I want to stay on course and improve where I can over the next 30 to 50 years,” he shared, joking about the ambitious aim of reaching the century mark in age.
He emphasised the importance of mindfulness and gratitude in his daily life, acknowledging the challenges of modern distractions. “It’s essential to connect with loved ones and allow moments to sink in,” he advised. His approach combines professional medical check-ups with a commitment to nutrition and regular physical activity, epitomising a well-rounded strategy for maintaining his health.
Cena’s candid discussion about Demodex blepharitis and the importance of health check-ups serves as a reminder for many, reinforcing the idea that prioritising well-being can lead to positive changes at any stage of life.
