Woman Dies During Family Vacation in the Dominican Republic After Sudden Medical Emergency, Family Says

A family from Pittsburgh is appealing for public support following the tragic passing of their loved one, Carolyn Russel, who died while on holiday in the Dominican Republic. The incident occurred during a weeklong family vacation in Punta Cana, which took a devastating turn shortly after they arrived.

According to reports from Russel’s sisters, the holiday began with excitement, but trouble arose soon after. “We went on an excursion to see some monkeys, and on the way back, she vomited,” recounted Patricia Powell, one of Carolyn’s sisters. This distressing incident was only the beginning of a medical emergency that would culminate in tragedy.

Days later, the family believes that Russel suffered a severe diabetic crisis, which subsequently resulted in her going into cardiac arrest. She was taken to a local hospital where she was placed on a ventilator. As her condition deteriorated, the family attempted to generate funds necessary for her medical evacuation back to the United States for further treatment.

“We contacted the U.S. Embassy hoping for assistance. Unfortunately, they were limited in what they could offer, simply providing us with a list of phone numbers to contact medevac services,” said Powell. The hospitals in the Dominican Republic lacked the resources required to give Russel the urgent care needed, and with no health insurance to cover the exorbitant costs of medical transport, the situation became increasingly dire.

Deborah Marshall, another sister of Russel, explained that the estimated cost to bring Carolyn back to Pittsburgh could reach approximately £45,000. This staggering sum encompasses expenses such as medical transportation, the ambulance, and necessary medical support during the journey. Faced with this financial burden, the family initiated a GoFundMe campaign with hopes of raising the required funds for their beloved sister’s transport and care.

Despite the best efforts of hospital staff, it soon became clear that they could not provide the level of care required for Russel’s condition. “The hospital staff had done what they could, but unfortunately, the facility was not equipped to provide the level of care she urgently needed,” noted Marshall in a statement to local television station WPXI.

As the family sought aid through the crowdfunding platform, they remained hopeful, believing that community support would help them through the heartbreaking ordeal. Tragically, on May 12, they were forced to share the devastating news that Russel had succumbed to her illness after going into cardiac arrest once more.

“Our hearts are broken,” the family shared on the GoFundMe page, which is still active, as they continue to appeal for financial assistance to facilitate the return of Carolyn’s body to the United States. “We are currently still in need of financial help so that our family can fly her body home,” they stated, reflecting their profound grief and the sense of urgency in their situation.
