Bran Castle, often referred to as Dracula’s Castle, has firmly established itself as Romania’s leading tourist attraction, drawing in over one million visitors annually. This iconic fortress, nestled in the heart of Transylvania, has recently seen changes in its operational management that are set to enhance its global appeal.

The castle has captured the imaginations of countless visitors, thanks in part to its connection to Bram Stoker’s renowned 1897 novel, ‘Dracula.’ Now, ownership of the operational aspect of Bran Castle has shifted to Joel Weinshanker’s Ad Populum group, a U.S.-based enterprise. Reports from local media, including Profit.ro, indicate that Ad Populum acquired an 80% stake from the Bran Domain Management Company (CADB), which had been in charge since 2009.

Ad Populum’s portfolio is diverse, encompassing various brands such as Chia Pet, WizKids, and Party City. Notably, the company also operates Graceland, the Memphis home of rock and roll icon Elvis Presley. The acquisition of Bran Castle follows the resolution of a protracted dispute concerning management rights, which had been settled in favour of Princess Ileana’s heirs, the castle’s current proprietors. They inherited the estate from Queen Marie, Ileana’s mother.
In light of the new acquisition, Ad Populum has embarked on a recruitment drive to develop comprehensive strategies for daily operations, which include managing ticket sales, maintenance, event planning, and guided tours. A spokesperson for the company highlighted in a statement that while they will manage operations, the castle itself will remain under the ownership of the Habsburg family. This partnership aims to position Bran Castle as a preeminent destination on the international stage, particularly targeting tourists from the United States and Western Europe.
Bran Castle’s allure is a unique blend of myth, history, and royal heritage, which continues to resonate with guests. The attraction recently achieved a remarkable profit of nearly $7 million in 2024, as reported by the Spanish newspaper El Pais. This reflects the castle’s burgeoning popularity, influenced not only by its supernatural associations but also by its historical significance.
While Bram Stoker drew inspiration from Bran Castle for his depiction of Dracula, it is noteworthy that he never set foot in Romania. The author relied on illustrations and descriptions of the castle that were available to him in England. The story of Dracula itself, while fictitious, is rooted in the historical figure of Vlad the Impaler, a 15th-century Wallachian ruler known for his notoriously brutal reign.
With the takeover now in place, the focus will be on leveraging this heritage to boost tourism not only to the castle but also to the surrounding region. The partnership between the heirs and Ad Populum spans several significant initiatives aimed at capitalising on the castle’s cultural and historical stature.
As plans for the future unfold, many will be watching closely to see how the new management impacts the visitor experience and the ongoing narrative surrounding Bran Castle. With the promise of enhanced services and outreach, it seems poised to maintain its status as a must-visit destination for tourists intrigued by its storied past and association with modern folklore.
