In an unexpected turn of events, a small bagel shop in Philadelphia has experienced two explosions this year, both of which were attributed to cooking equipment malfunctions. New York Bagels, situated in the Overbrook Park area, is now dealing with extensive damage following these incidents.

According to a spokesperson for the Philadelphia Fire Department, the most recent explosion occurred on 10 May at approximately 5:15 a.m. This incident came only hours before the shop was scheduled for a grand reopening after undergoing renovations. Fortunately, while the first explosion this year resulted in an injury, the second explosion did not cause any harm to staff or bystanders.

He further noted that this incident was more intense than the first. Luckily for the staff, Kayyali had scheduled them to arrive at 4 a.m., but their late arrival due to missed alarms prevented any injuries among his employees.

Reports indicate that the latest explosion left the front of the shop severely damaged, shattering windows and dislodging ceiling tiles. In light of these events, Kayyali is determined to resume normal operations as soon as possible. He is currently in the process of securing a new oven before reopening. Reflecting on the challenges faced, he remarked, “It’s unfortunate, but it’s God’s plan.”

Prior to the recent calamities, Kayyali had made ambitious plans for his business, intending to celebrate the reopening with an extravagant amount of food: 1,000 bagels and 500 pounds of cream cheese were part of the vision.
