**Travel Influencer Quarantined After Potential Hantavirus Exposure on Cruise Ship**

A travel content creator, Jake Rosmarin, aged 29, is currently in quarantine at the National Quarantine Unit in Nebraska after a potential exposure to hantavirus while aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship. Rosmarin’s adventure took a distressing turn when he learned of a fellow passenger testing positive for the virus just as he was set to disembark.
Rosmarin had been sharing his experiences on social media as he explored remote islands during a 35-day transatlantic cruise. His updates highlighted stunning natural landscapes, sunrises, and various wildlife, including multiple species of penguins. However, on May 3, his idyllic journey took a sharp downturn upon receiving news of the virus exposure.
Describing his reaction, Rosmarin stated, “A trip of a lifetime ended in a nightmare. I was in panic mode.” The alarming information came to light the night before he was due to leave the ship. Overwhelmed by worries, he sought reassurance from his mother, who is a paediatrician in New York, and from his fiancée in Boston. While they provided some comforting perspectives, he still struggled with fear regarding the implications of the exposure.
Following the revelation, Rosmarin confined himself to his cabin for a week, grappling with a mix of emotions. Despite the tumult of the situation, he utilised his social media presence to keep friends and followers updated, attracting a variety of responses—ranging from concern to scepticism about the severity of the situation.
When the ship finally docked in the Canary Islands on May 10 and passengers were repatriated, Rosmarin discovered he would be quarantined in Nebraska rather than New York or Atlanta, which he initially expected. The unexpected destination left him feeling relieved as he finally had a plan in place. “I was desperate for a plan because the unknown for almost a week was just too stressful for me,” he shared.
Rosmarin was among 15 American passengers who were relocated to the quarantine unit. Due to restrictions imposed by Spanish authorities, he was allowed to bring only a small bag with him. Fortunately, he can receive packages from family members and order supplies online while isolating. He has even recorded an unboxing video to share with his followers.
Feeling buoyed by a new environment, he described his quarantine accommodation as significantly more spacious than his cabin on the ship. He has taken steps to make his living conditions more comfortable, such as ordering bedding and a blanket from Amazon.
Given that hantavirus has a lengthy incubation period, Rosmarin is prepared for a potentially extensive isolation. “I plan to be here the full 42 days,” he remarked. Acknowledging the potential risks to himself and others, he stated, “I don’t want to expose my friends and family or the general public.”
Rosmarin has embraced the protocols in place at the quarantine facility, where medical staff conduct daily checks and maintain strict safety measures. He described feeling well cared for, even as the healthcare professionals donned protective gear during their interactions. The unit boasts amenities like a smart TV, exercise equipment, and a variety of ways to stay engaged during his isolation.
He expressed gratitude for the care he is receiving, highlighting that he can access medical intervention if necessary. “If caught early, your chances are pretty high,” Rosmarin commented, reflecting on his current situation in comparison to the challenges he faced while on board the ship.
By remaining optimistic and proactive about his health and wellbeing, Rosmarin has begun to count down the days left in his quarantine. “I’m already halfway over,” he stated confidently, adding, “I feel great. I’m staying hydrated, eating well, and I’m looking forward to starting an exercise routine.”
Meanwhile, other passengers from the MV Hondius have also begun their quarantines in different locations, whether at home or in designated facilities across various countries. The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported a total of 11 cases linked to the ship, including three fatalities, whilst two additional cases remain under consideration.
