Camille Kostek is back for her ninth consecutive edition of the renowned Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue, this time making waves in Botswana. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, the model shared her experiences during the photo shoot, including an unexpected and daunting encounter with local wildlife that left her feeling considerably shaken.

The 34-year-old Connecticut native was embarking on her first trip to Africa for this particular shoot, situated within the unique landscape of the Okavango Delta. Kostek admitted that she had not anticipated the fears that would arise when encountering local fauna, particularly a troop of baboons that left a distinct impression on her.
Reflecting on her stay, Kostek recounted a memorable incident that occurred after she had enjoyed a sunrise safari. “I was taking a nap when I heard banging sounds,” she explained. Initially believing it to be some kind of maintenance work at her accommodation—an unconventional glass house situated in the midst of nature—she was startled to discover it was actually a large male baboon.
“I quickly realised that confronting male baboons is not advisable,” she noted, recounting her hurried retreat back indoors. Her unexpected visitor became aware of her presence, asserting his dominance in a rather unnerving way. “He approached the screen and seemed to say, ‘I see you. You’re in my home,’” Kostek revealed. The model later learned that her lodging was located within a tree typically occupied by baboons, which added an amusing twist to her apprehension.
Despite the initial terror caused by her run-in with the baboons, Kostek described the overall experience of shooting in Africa as nothing short of extraordinary. She spent nine days immersed in the breathtaking environment, partaking in multiple safaris that would ultimately yield unforgettable memories. “It was an experience I have not had with Sports Illustrated Swimsuit, let alone in my life,” she remarked.
Captured by renowned photographer Ruven Afanador, Kostek showcased a variety of striking looks throughout the shoot. Among the ensembles were an elegant white bikini paired with matching trousers, a bold red one-piece embedded against Botswana’s majestic scenery, and a vibrant green swimsuit at her safari retreat. She also donned a striking animal-print outfit while positioned within the raw splendour of the local wildlife.
Kostek was not alone on this exciting venture; she was joined in Botswana by fellow models Alix Earle, Penny Lane, Achieng Agutu, and Meredith Mickelson. Earle, notably, featured as one of the four cover stars for this year’s edition, alongside Hilary Duff, Nicole Williams English, and Tiffany Haddish.
In addition to showcasing her modelling skills, Kostek expressed an appreciation for the rich, untamed beauty of Africa, describing the myriad of wildlife she encountered. “There are lions, monkeys, cougars, hippopotamuses, snakes, hyenas, wild dogs, and exotic birds,” she elaborated, highlighting the myriad of creatures that define the unique African landscape.
The experience, though daunting at times, has undoubtedly contributed to Kostek’s breadth of professional encounters and personal growth. Despite her initial fears, she conveyed a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to work in such a remarkable setting.
