The incident has captured considerable attention, especially following revelations surrounding a birthday celebration that was taking place aboard the vessel, identified as the Nauti Neighbors. According to eyewitness accounts, an attempt to light birthday candles may have triggered the explosion. Adrian, the son of one of the injured passengers, Adriana Rojas Torres, expressed concerns that the ignition of the lighter coincided with the blast.
Adrian stated to local news outlet WSVN 7News, “She was the one that was to light the candle. When it was her turn, she was unable to ignite it, possibly due to the wind. Someone else stepped in, and that’s when the boat exploded.” Adriana suffered second-degree burns and is currently receiving treatment at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
The Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department reported that the explosion injured multiple passengers, with approximately 11 individuals requiring hospital care. Adrian described his mother’s condition as serious but stabilising, stating, “I don’t think she can walk yet, she’s still in a lot of pain. She experiences dizziness and lightheadedness.” Despite her injuries, he noted that her spirits were improving.
Another survivor, Jim Scott, shared the harrowing experience of his wife, Paola, who sustained burns over more than half of her body, including her stomach and limbs. He expressed disbelief at the incident, likening it to a car accident rather than a maritime explosion. Scott also supported the claim that the explosion occurred when passengers were attempting to light candles for the birthday celebration, describing the moment as dramatic and sudden.
Fifteen individuals were ultimately injured in the explosion, prompting a rapid response from emergency services approximately at 12:45 PM. The Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, the Coast Guard, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission were all involved in managing the aftermath of the explosion.
In the wake of the incident, Patrick Lee, a witness, speculated that improper ventilation of the vessel might have contributed to the explosion. “It seemed like they were in a rush, and when the key was turned, they hadn’t opened the hatches or turned on the blowers,” he claimed, suggesting that these oversights could have had catastrophic consequences.
Additionally, the vessel involved was identified as a Press Cruiser 400 Express, a 40-foot cabin cruiser that is typically certified for recreational use, according to the U.S. Coast Guard database.
