Eileen Wang, a former mayor of Arcadia, California, has been accused of acting as an illegal agent for the People’s Republic of China. Her election to the City Council in 2022, followed by her designation as mayor, has drawn national attention following claims of her involvement with Chinese officials prior to her taking office.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Wang, alongside her then-fiancé Yaoning “Mike” Sun, allegedly engaged in promoting pro-Chinese propaganda through a website called U.S. News Center from late 2020 until she was elected to the City Council in late 2022. The website purported to serve the local Chinese American community but has been described as a platform for disseminating messages aligned with Chinese government interests.

The allegations contend that Wang and Sun communicated directly with Chinese officials, receiving directives on what content to post. For example, in June 2021, Wang allegedly received pre-written content from a Chinese official and posted it on their website almost immediately. Notable among the materials shared was a letter denying accusations made against China regarding forced labour and human rights violations in Xinjiang.
As her involvement with the Chinese government intensified, Wang faced scrutiny regarding the extent of her collaboration. Concerns were raised when it was revealed that the couple communicated through encrypted messaging to ensure their discussions about content shared on the U.S. News Center remained confidential. In late 2022, however, her alleged ties to these activities reportedly ceased upon entering public office.
Wang was sworn in as a member of the Arcadia City Council in December 2022 and became mayor in February 2026 as part of the council’s rotating leadership system. Notwithstanding her election, her association with Sun continued, as he served as her campaign treasurer, raising questions about the influences in her political life.
In a separate legal matter, Sun pleaded guilty in October 2025 to charges of serving as an illegal agent for the Chinese government, admitting to disseminating pro-PRC content at the behest of Chinese officials. He was subsequently sentenced to four years in federal prison earlier this year, marking a significant legal development linked to Wang’s case.
Wang’s situation escalated dramatically in May 2026 when the U.S. Attorney’s Office formally charged her with acting as an illegal agent of the Chinese government. Following these charges, she announced her resignation as mayor and from her position on the City Council. City officials expressed deep concerns regarding the allegations, describing them as troubling instances of foreign influence on local governance.
In a statement highlighting the seriousness of the situation, Assistant Attorney General for National Security, John A. Eisenberg, remarked on the inappropriateness of a public official failing to disclose such relationships. The U.S. Attorney’s Office indicated that investigations revealed no connection between Wang’s alleged actions and the city’s financial operations or decision-making processes.
Following her resignation, Wang has agreed to plead guilty to the charges. If convicted, she could face a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison, a significant consequence that underscores the gravity of her alleged offences. It has not only raised questions about her judgment but has also sparked broader discussions on the implications of foreign influence in local politics.
As of now, the legal proceedings are in motion, and Wang’s case continues to unfold amid allegations that pose serious ethical considerations within public service. The situation has garnered considerable media attention, and with further updates expected, the implications for the Arcadia community and local governance remain a critical focus.
