Darlene Mitchell, a former contestant from “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” tied the knot with Branden Marcus in a stunning ceremony that took place on March 28 at SmogShoppe in Culver City, California. At 34 years old, both Darlene and Branden expressed delight in their choice of venue. SmogShoppe’s unique indoor-outdoor setting, styled with a desert-inspired aesthetic, resonated with the couple’s fond memories spent in Joshua Tree. Darlene noted a deeper emotional connection to the venue, highlighting its historic significance as a former auto repair shop, which reminded her of her family’s background in car building. The interior decor featured whimsical touches, including a large cat painting that closely resembled one from Branden’s family’s fabric store in Venice, California.
The couple worked with Gabriela Pilar Events and Pilar Floral to transform SmogShoppe into a magical space. Embracing a bold, maximalist design, Darlene noted how the decorations reflected their passions for antiques and collected objects. Each reception table was adorned with vignettes crafted from their personal collection, creating immersive environments throughout the venue. The inspiration for their wedding theme came from the retro elegance of the Madonna Inn, combined with the unconventional flair of filmmaker John Waters.

Opting for a tighter guest list allowed Darlene and Branden to cultivate an intimate atmosphere. “We wanted the evening to feel like a celebration of our love from start to finish,” Darlene explained. They ensured the event maintained warmth and closeness, enabling their nearest and dearest to share in the moment. Among the guests were several fellow “Drag Race” alumni, including Jane Don’t, Juicy Love Dion, and Mia Starr.

During the heartfelt ceremony, the couple surprised their guests by reading their vows from the DVD cases of their favourite films—Darlene with “Steel Magnolias” and Branden with “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion.” They donned matching pinstripe suits designed by H Bar C, with Darlene in a deep brown and Branden in navy, complemented by emerald accessories that symbolised their shared love for the colour.
The joyous atmosphere was further enhanced by the performance of Dolly Parton tribute artist Vancie Vega, who officiated the nuptials. As “L-O-V-E” by Nat King Cole played, the couple walked down the aisle hand in hand, marking an emotional beginning to their union. Subsequent to the ceremony, guests enjoyed a delightful outdoor cocktail hour, featuring signature drinks and an array of appetizers.
Culinary offerings were provided by Spotted Hen Catering, who served a family-style meal at each table. The dessert spread included a gorgeous vintage-inspired powder-blue wedding cake, alongside a tribute armadillo cake reminiscent of “Steel Magnolias.” The couple’s first dance to Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time” added an endearing touch to the festivities, enhanced by a projected image of Kermit and Miss Piggy, creating a whimsical backdrop.
Reflecting on their wedding day, Darlene expressed her gratitude, describing it as a uniquely beautiful experience. She remarked, “People coming together to celebrate love in a space where that was the only thing expected of them was beautiful.” The couple’s journey began over Instagram, where Branden reached out to Darlene as she was starting her drag career, leading to their first date at Baby Blues BBQ in West Hollywood.
Darlene proposed to Branden in July 2024 at Lake Tippecanoe, a location that holds sentimental value for both families. Incorporating rings borrowed from Branden’s grandparents, her heartfelt proposal was infused with memories of their grandparents, adding a layer of significance to the occasion. With ten years spent together prior to their wedding, the couple felt a renewed sense of commitment, realising it marked the beginning of their family.
As they settle into married life, Darlene reflected on the emotional depth their union has brought. “The love, devotion, and commitment we made with each other feels like the start of a family,” she stated, highlighting the newfound peace that accompanies their vows. For both Darlene and Branden, their wedding symbolised not just a celebration of love, but a milestone that enhances their journey together as a couple in the LGBTQ community.
