In the wake of the mysterious disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, a local neighbourhood association in Arizona is urging supporters to refrain from leaving flowers and memorial items at her home. Concerns regarding safety and maintenance have prompted this request, reflecting the ongoing distress in the Tucson community regarding her fate.

Will Pew, president of the Catalina Foothills Association, communicated these concerns in a newsletter circulated on 11 May. He explained that the presence of memorial tributes has resulted in unintended consequences, such as attracting wildlife, and has led to safety issues that must be addressed as warmer temperatures prevail.

Nancy Guthrie, 84, vanished from her home on 1 February. Authorities believe she was abducted in the night, a theory supported by surveillance footage showing a masked individual near her property. Despite extensive investigations, no suspects have yet been identified. The circumstances surrounding her disappearance have stirred significant unease among local residents, who have expressed feeling “on edge” due to the sudden influx of individuals travelling to the area to pay their respects.

Pew noted that while the intention behind the memorials was undoubtedly heartfelt, the realities of animals, wind, and rising temperatures have made their presence problematic. To encourage more helpful forms of support, he recommended that well-wishers donate to World Vision, an international humanitarian organisation that Nancy holds dear.
Reflecting on Nancy’s enduring ties to the community, Pew remarked, “Nancy has been a resident of our neighbourhood for over 50 years. Her children, like me and my children, attended our local public schools. She is deeply rooted in Tucson and the Catalina Foothills, and her family has many close friends who are all suffering while waiting for news of her whereabouts.”
Pew’s message also emphasised respect for Nancy’s family during this difficult time, urging the community to keep them in their thoughts while respecting their privacy. “Our homes may be relatively far apart, but as neighbours, we are closer than ever,” he concluded, recognising the unity that emerges amid distress.
Meanwhile, the investigation into Nancy’s disappearance continues. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos recently reported to the media that investigators are making progress but did not disclose specific details. Evidence collected includes blood found outside her home, along with mixed DNA samples that are being analysed in hopes of identifying a suspect.
In the midst of this, Savannah Guthrie, Nancy’s daughter and co-anchor of the Today show, remains a prominent voice in the effort to find her mother. She has been vocal on social media, and after taking a brief leave of absence from the show, she continues to share poignant tributes. Recently, on Mother’s Day, she posted a heartfelt message accompanied by several clips of Nancy. In her post, Savannah expressed the family’s pain: “Mother, daughter, sister, Nonie — we miss you with our every breath. We will never stop looking for you. We will never be at peace until we find you.”
The search for Nancy has spurred significant community involvement and support, with the FBI offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to her recovery or an arrest in the case. In a remarkable show of solidarity, Savannah and her family have since increased that reward to a staggering $1 million.
As the investigation progresses, local authorities have called upon anyone with information related to Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance to reach out. Those with insights are encouraged to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324) or the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 520-351-4900.
The community remains united in their hope for Nancy’s safe return, as both neighbours and family continue to grapple with this unfathomable situation. The plea for respect during this difficult time underlines the shared commitment to preserving the integrity of the neighbourhood while seeking justice and closure for Nancy’s family.
