A New Zealand mother has received a heartwarming reunion with her lost gold locket, which contains precious family photographs, after it was discovered by a member of the public and returned to the authorities. The sentimental piece of jewellery, which has been in Merle Brett’s family for many years, disappeared while she was en route to a significant family celebration.

Brett, a resident of Thames, was travelling to South Auckland for a 90th birthday celebration when the locket slipped from her possession during her visit to a Woolworths supermarket in Pukekohe South. It wasn’t until she returned home that she realised the cherished item was missing.

Upon noticing the absence of the locket, Brett promptly contacted her daughter, urging her to monitor social media platforms for any posts related to lost items. Recognising the importance of the locket, which holds not only sentimental value but also family history, they hoped that it might turn up online.
Fortunately, their hopes rested upon the actions of a kind-hearted individual. According to a news release from New Zealand Police, a person found the locket shortly after Brett lost it and took the initiative to hand it over to the Pukekohe Police Station. Subsequently, the police took to Facebook to share information about the lost item in an effort to locate its rightful owner.
In the initial weeks following the post, however, there was little progress. Senior Sergeant Jeremy Steedman expressed the frustrations felt by police as responses dwindled. “We were starting to lose hope that someone would claim it,” he remarked, reflecting on the uncertainty surrounding the locket’s fate.
Weeks later, a breakthrough occurred. While browsing through social media, Brett’s daughter came across the police post displaying the locket’s image. Captivated by the striking resemblance, she made the connection and shared the news with her mother. “She thought what are the chances two lockets were lost in the same place,” Brett recalled her daughter saying, as hope was reignited following the discovery.
In a turn of events, Brett’s son-in-law Cameron decided to visit the Pukekohe Police Station unexpectedly. He quickly informed officers that the locket belonged to his mother-in-law. This unexpected visit paved the way for the long-awaited reunion, bringing joy to Brett and her family.
Inside the locket are treasured photographs of Brett’s in-laws, further amplifying its emotional significance. “That locket has been in our family a long time,” Brett expressed, highlighting the deep-rooted connection her family has with the piece of jewellery.
Once the locket was returned to her, Brett felt immense gratitude towards the person who had found it and handed it in to the police. “I’m so grateful to the person who found it and handed it in,” she remarked. The heartfelt gratitude displayed by Brett is a testament to the compassion shown throughout this experience.
As the story of the locket’s return spreads, it highlights the role of community and kindness in ensuring that cherished items can be reunited with their owners. While conditions seemed grim for a while, the eventual happy ending serves as a reminder of the positive outcomes that can come from joining together as a community.
