Antoinette Webb, a mother from Maine, has expressed her heartfelt gratitude towards the staff at Fort Knox for their life-saving assistance during a recent medical emergency. Last week, Webb was enjoying a family day out with her nine-year-old twins, Ella and Jonah, when she encountered an unusual green beetle that led to a critical allergic reaction.
The incident occurred while the family was exploring Fort Knox, a historic site located in Maine. Webb was captivated by the vibrant appearance of a six-spotted tiger beetle she had never seen before. “It was a beautiful berry green, and I just picked him up, fascinated,” Webb recounts. “But within seconds, I felt a burning sensation spreading through my body,” she added, illustrating the rapid onset of her symptoms.

As the situation escalated, Webb began experiencing severe symptoms, including airway constriction and vision loss. Clutching at her throat and struggling to breathe, she quickly made her way to a nearby gift shop for aid. Unfortunately, this was her last clear memory from the ordeal, as her condition deteriorated rapidly.
Dean Martin, the executive director of Friends of Fort Knox and a trained medic with 24 years’ experience in the Army, responded to Webb’s medical emergency. In an interview, Martin described her symptoms as alarming and highly unusual. “She was lying there, and I’m holding her hand and talking to 911,” he explained. “She lost consciousness due to a constricted airway, and her lips had turned blue.”
Sherry Martin, Dean’s wife, stayed with Webb’s children throughout the emergency, while another staff member, Alex, assisted in providing care. The team administered Benadryl in an attempt to alleviate Webb’s symptoms while awaiting the arrival of emergency medical responders. “She was not breathing at one point,” Martin recalled. “I thought I might need to perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.”
The severity of Webb’s condition became evident as she began losing her vision and had no recollection of the moments following the beetle incident. Fortunately, upon their arrival, paramedics provided her with four shots of epinephrine to counteract the life-threatening effects of the allergic reaction, which was later deemed a “one in a million” occurrence triggered by the insect bite.
In an effort to ensure Webb received immediate medical attention, Dean Martin took the initiative to drive her vehicle to the local hospital as she was being treated.
Approximately a day after the incident, Webb returned to Fort Knox with her children to express her gratitude to the staff, particularly to Martin. Overwhelmed with emotion, she conveyed, “Because of you, they have their mum today.” With tears in her eyes, she acknowledged the crucial role he played in saving her life.
Martin, who remembered Webb as a regular visitor to the site, shared his perspective on the incident. “If the roles were reversed, I’m sure Antoinette would’ve done the same for me,” he said, highlighting the bond formed during the crisis.
Fort Knox took to social media to commend the efforts of its staff and the first responders involved in the emergency. They expressed their sincere appreciation in a Facebook post, thanking the Stockton Springs Ambulance Service, Bucksport Fire Department, and MaineHealth Waldo Hospital for their prompt and effective response. Special recognition was also given to the 911 operators, whose role is often overlooked during such emergencies.
As of now, representatives from the various services involved in the response have not provided further comments on the incident, but Webb’s story serves as a potent reminder of the critical importance of quick action in life-threatening situations.
This near-tragic experience highlights both the unpredictability of nature and the invaluable contribution of trained individuals ready to step into action during emergencies. It also emphasises the importance of being aware of allergies, particularly in outdoor settings, where encounters with unfamiliar insects can lead to unforeseen consequences. With her life saved, Antoinette Webb can now continue to enjoy precious moments with her children, thanks to the vigilance and readiness of those at Fort Knox who acted swiftly in her time of need.
