A Michigan man has been sentenced to a lengthy jail term following a tragic incident on his wedding night in late August, where he deliberately struck and killed his groomsman. James Shirah, aged 24, was handed a prison sentence ranging from 30 to 45 years after pleading no contest to charges of second-degree murder, as well as failure to stop at the scene of an accident that resulted in death, and driving with a suspended or revoked licence.

The court heard that the altercation took place just hours after Shirah exchanged vows with his bride, Savanah Collier, during a ceremony on 30 August 2024, in Flint, Michigan. Following a heated argument with 29-year-old Terry Lewis Taylor Jr., who was serving as Shirah’s groomsman, it was reported that Shirah used his SUV to intentionally collide with Taylor, leading to the latter’s untimely death.

In the proceedings held on 11 May, Shirah expressed deep remorse for the events, stating, “I will forever be sorry,” and insisted that he did not intend to harm his long-time friend. His emotional plea was met with a stern response from Genesee County Circuit Court Judge Khary Hanible, who acknowledged Shirah’s character but definitively stated, “You are, however, a killer.”
Shirah’s plea agreement resulted in a sentence of 30 to 45 years for the murder charge, with additional terms of 10 to 15 years for the other charges. These sentences are set to run concurrently. He was also ordered to pay £334 in fines and court costs, with credit for 618 days already served in custody factored into his sentencing.
His attorney, Harrell Milhouse, argued that the collision was an unfortunate accident exacerbated by factors such as alcohol. “There was a fight, an argument, with alcohol involved,” Milhouse elaborated, suggesting that the altercation spiralled out of control among friends.
Collier, aged 23, has also faced legal consequences in the wake of the tragedy. She pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact and may seek a more lenient sentence under the Holmes Youthful Trainee Act during a hearing scheduled for 26 May. If approved by the judge and if she successfully completes probation, the charges against her could ultimately be dismissed.
According to multiple reports, Shirah had been drinking heavily prior to the incident, and testimony revealed that he briefly left the argument with Taylor, only to return moments later and strike him with the vehicle. The impact reportedly sent Taylor airborne, resulting in fatal injuries.
Terry Lewis Taylor Jr.’s family has been vocal in their anguish regarding the incident. In a powerful victim impact statement, Eren Taylor, a cousin of the deceased, recalled the horrific moments after the crash, describing the scene as one filled with blood and sorrow. She directed a pointed comment towards Shirah during the court session, expressing hope for a severe punishment.
A GoFundMe campaign was established to assist with the financial burdens of Taylor’s funeral expenses, calling him an “amazing person” whose death was “completely unexpected.” The fundraiser has garnered over $3,000 towards its £5,000 goal, reflecting the community’s grief over the young man’s passing and the profound impact of the incident.
As the court proceedings unfold, the tragedy remains a stark reminder of the potential consequences of dangerous decisions made in moments of anger and alcohol-fuelled altercations. The case has drawn attention to the broader implications of such behaviour and the severe repercussions that can result from violent actions, as lives are irrevocably changed and families are left to grapple with overwhelming loss.
