The crisis began shortly after 11 p.m. when the airline reported that its plane had collided with a pedestrian on the runway. Emergency services were deployed immediately to the scene, but unfortunately, Mott succumbed to multiple blunt and sharp force injuries. Denver’s Chief Medical Examiner, Dr. Sterling McLaren, determined that the manner of death was a suicide, following an investigation that encompassed both on-site and post-mortem examinations.

In a press conference that took place shortly after the incident, Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas outlined that investigators are reaching out to Mott’s family and acquaintances to gain insight into the events leading up to his fatal actions. He expressed empathy for those affected, stating that the situation was undoubtedly traumatic for many individuals involved.
“It’s an incredibly difficult and traumatic situation for a lot of people,” Chief Thomas said. “My heart goes out to all of them as they process what they experienced on that night.”
Phil Washington, the CEO of Denver International Airport, characterised the event as a “horrible tragedy.” He revealed that Mott had managed to climb over an eight-foot perimeter fence topped with barbed wire before crossing the runway. The unfortunate collision with the aircraft occurred merely minutes after he had breached the perimeter, around 11:15 p.m., as he crossed Runway 17 Left.
Frontier Airlines confirmed the incident, noting that the flight, carrying 224 passengers and seven crew members, encountered complications following the collision. The pilot reported smoke in the cabin and an engine fire, prompting an immediate decision to abort the takeoff. All passengers were evacuated safely using emergency slides, demonstrating the effective emergency protocols in place.
Reports indicate that following the incident, a total of twelve people experienced minor injuries, with five requiring transportation to local hospitals for further evaluation. Fortunately, as of recent updates, four of the five individuals have been discharged.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident. As part of this inquiry, audio recordings from air traffic control captured the pilot’s urgent reports regarding the collision, which highlighted the immediate dangers faced during that harrowing moment.
In the recording, the pilot stated, “Tower, Frontier 4345, we’re stopping on the runway. We just hit somebody… we have an engine fire. We have 231 souls on board. There was an individual walking across the runway.” Following these distressing reports, he then announced plans to evacuate, indicating the seriousness of the situation.
Frontier Airlines has expressed its commitment to thoroughly investigate the incident, working alongside airport and safety authorities to ascertain further details. In light of such distressing events, the airline has also encouraged those who may be experiencing mental health challenges to reach out for support.
This incident has raised various questions about safety protocols and the adequacy of security measures at busy airports like DIA. As the investigation proceeds, authorities aim to ensure that the necessary steps are taken to prevent any future occurrences of this nature.
With so many passengers and crew members potentially bearing the emotional scars from this event, the community in Denver is grappling with the circumstances surrounding Mott’s death and the implications it brings to mental health awareness and airport safety.
