Panettiere, who is the mother of 11-year-old Kaya, expressed her deep emotional investment in her child, declaring, “The idea that anybody would think that I would just give away my child and be okay with it is heartbreaking.” Her remarks come after she signed over custody of Kaya to her ex-fiancé, Wladimir Klitschko, back in 2018. At that time, Panettiere was grappling with significant mental health issues and battling substance abuse.

The actress, known for her role in “Heroes”, explained that her experience had led her to seek help on her own terms. “A misconception is that I have been, in the past, forced into treatment when, in fact, I have been the one who has sought it out,” she says, emphasising her proactive approach to her well-being during a tumultuous period in her life.

Wladimir Klitschko, a former heavyweight boxing champion, chose to have Kaya live in Europe while Panettiere underwent treatment for her struggles with alcoholism and substance abuse. This decision, while painful, was made with Kaya’s best interests in mind, as Panettiere described the struggle of not having her daughter with her daily. “It’s just a really intense feeling or multiple feelings really layered together,” she recalled, highlighting the emotional weight of that time.
As Kaya settled into life in Europe, Panettiere noted that her daughter flourished in her new environment. Kaya began to adapt to her surroundings, learning to speak multiple languages. “By the time I finally got healthy, I felt like it would have been unfair of me to, and selfish, to try to pull her out of this life that she had been creating,” said Panettiere, acknowledging the richness of Kaya’s experiences during her time abroad.
Kaya is now described as being incredibly happy and well-adjusted, speaking an impressive five languages. Panettiere shared with pride that her daughter knows she is loved by both parents and feels secure in their support. “I know in my heart that she feels supported,” she stated, radiating warmth in her description of their relationship.
Still committed to maintaining a close connection, Panettiere has made efforts to remain involved in Kaya’s life. She travels to see her as often as she can, and they regularly communicate via FaceTime, where they delve into meaningful conversations. “We have a really intense, incredible bond, and I’m very grateful for that,” she noted, reflecting on the depth of their relationship.
In closing, Panettiere emphasised that Kaya understands her parents are devoted to ensuring her happiness and health across all facets of life. “She knows that she has two parents that would do anything in the world to make sure that she is happy and healthy, mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually,” she affirmed, stressing her commitment to remaining an ever-present figure in her daughter’s life.
As Panettiere continues to navigate her own healing journey, her dedication to her daughter remains unwavering. The actress’s candidness in discussing her struggles and triumphs serves as a reminder of the complexities of motherhood and the powerful bonds that endure, regardless of circumstance.
