British musician and actress FKA Twigs is set to portray the iconic Jazz Age entertainer Josephine Baker in an eagerly anticipated biopic. This project, helmed by French director Maïmouna Doucouré, marks Twigs’ first significant role in a Hollywood film, promising to bring the legendary figure’s inspiring story to a new generation.
In a statement released on 11 May 2024, Twigs expressed her excitement about stepping into the shoes of Baker. “I cannot wait to embody Josephine Baker, bringing her fight, her love, her losses, her talent and her heroism to the big screen,” said the singer, whose real name is Tahliah Debrett Barnett. She emphasised Baker’s enduring legacy, describing her as a “visionary, ground-breaking woman” and highlighting the relevance of her story today.

Baker, who was born in St. Louis in 1906, rose to international fame after relocating to France. She became a cabaret sensation during the 1920s, known for her talent as a singer and dancer. Notably, she made history as the first Black woman to star in a major motion picture, featuring in the 1927 silent film “Siren of the Tropics.” Baker’s life was filled with significant achievements and struggles, ultimately becoming a symbol of empowerment and resilience.
The production of the biopic is reportedly set to commence in the autumn. The project has received the endorsement of Baker’s estate, along with support from two of her 12 adopted children, Jean-Claude and Brian Bouillon Baker. This approval adds an important layer of authenticity and respect to the representation of Baker’s complex life.
The biopic comes at a time when Baker’s story remains profoundly relevant. She is remembered not only for her artistic contributions but also for her activism, particularly her efforts in the civil rights movement. Twigs’ portrayal aims to delve deep into Baker’s multifaceted life, illustrating her as a modern, fearless individual who also experienced personal contradictions and challenges.
Maïmouna Doucouré, who gained acclaim for her debut film “Cuties,” is committed to exploring all aspects of Baker’s life. “Working on this film, I realise how modern, fearless and complex [Baker] was,” Doucouré remarked. She aims to highlight not only Baker’s legendary status but also her vulnerabilities, courage, and relentless pursuit of dignity amidst adversity.
FKA Twigs, a Grammy-winning artist known for her eclectic style and innovative music, has also dabbled in acting. Her previous credits include roles in “Honey Boy” (2019), the upcoming remake of “The Crow” (2024), and “Mother Mary” (2023). However, this biopic represents her first lead role, amplifying expectations for her performance as one of the 20th century’s most dynamic figures.
Details regarding the title and release date of the film have yet to be disclosed, but anticipation is already building. Given Baker’s rich legacy and Twigs’ artistic vision, the project is expected to resonate with both fans of Baker and a broader audience seeking to understand the journeys of remarkable women throughout history.
As the film enters production, audiences can look forward to a compelling retelling of a woman who not only entertained but also fought tirelessly for equality and social justice. With Twigs at the helm, the biopic promises to celebrate Baker’s indomitable spirit while addressing the complexities of her life and the time in which she lived.
