A tragic two-vehicle collision in Illinois on Sunday has claimed the lives of three individuals, including a promising student athlete from the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC). Sariyah Watson, aged 21, was en route to celebrate Mother’s Day with her mother when the accident occurred early in the morning.

According to the Illinois State Police (ISP), the incident took place at approximately 4 a.m. on Interstate 88 in Aurora, where a vehicle allegedly travelling the wrong way collided head-on with another car. Reports indicate that Watson and her passenger were in the vehicle impacted by the wrong-way driver, who was identified as a 32-year-old man. All three were pronounced dead at the scene.

Watson was not only a dedicated student but also a sprinter on the UIC track team, where she was studying sports management. Her father, Antonio Watson, expressed his devastation over the sudden loss, stating, “How somebody does that is beyond me. No script can be written that will allow you to accept this type of tragic loss.” He conveyed how they were looking forward to celebrating the occasion together.
Friends of Watson noted that she was familiar with the area and was on her way home when the accident occurred. Ava Spencer, a close friend of hers, emphasised, “She definitely was on her way home because that road is near her house, on the way towards her house.”
The UIC Flames, the university’s intercollegiate athletic teams, released a heartfelt statement mourning Watson’s passing. They wrote on social media, “It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Sariyah Watson, a junior member of our women’s track & field programme. Sariyah was a cherished member of our Flames Family, and our deepest condolences go out to her family, friends, teammates, and coaches during this incredibly difficult time.”
Watson’s determination and spirit was highlighted by her father, who remarked that she lived her life with the same tenacity she displayed as an athlete. “She lived life basically the way she would finish a race, with extreme determination and grit. And it’s just so tragic that the finish line came too soon for her,” he said.
Authorities have yet to release the names of the other victims involved in the crash; however, the ISP has confirmed that investigations into the incident are ongoing. It remains unclear how a vehicle was allowed to travel in the wrong direction on the busy interstate.
As the community mourns, tributes have begun to pour in for Watson, whose passion for sports and commitment to her studies were evident to those who knew her.
Plans for memorials and tributes to honour Watson’s legacy are likely to emerge as her friends and the UIC community grapple with the profound loss. It is a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the unpredictable nature of tragic events such as this.
The Kane County Coroner’s Office is also involved in the investigation, and updates are expected as further details about the incident arise. The family of Sariyah Watson has reached out to the UIC and authorities for more information regarding the circumstances surrounding the accident. This harrowing incident serves as a painful reminder of the impact of reckless driving and the need for greater awareness on the roads.
