Eileen Wang, who formerly served as mayor of Arcadia, California, has stepped down from her position amid serious federal allegations. The U.S. Attorney’s Office announced on May 11 that Wang is facing a charge of acting as an illegal agent for the People’s Republic of China (PRC). This marks a significant development in a case that has raised questions about foreign influence in local politics.

Wang’s resignation came shortly after the federal charges were made public, with a spokesperson confirming that she had relinquished her roles as mayor and council member for the city of Arcadia. Wang, 58, was appointed mayor on February 16 of this year, representing the city located within Los Angeles County.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Wang is reportedly set to plead guilty in the forthcoming weeks. The charges state that she collaborated with another individual, Yaoning “Mike” Sun, who is also under scrutiny for allegedly promoting PRC propaganda in the United States through a media outlet. The duo operated a website named U.S. News Center, which claimed to serve as a source of news for the local Chinese-American community.
Federal prosecutors allege that from late 2020 through 2022, Wang and Sun received directives from PRC officials to disseminate pro-China content via their website. It is claimed that they communicated with Chinese government representatives through encrypted messages, discussing articles that had been pre-written for publication. For instance, Wang purportedly confirmed to a PRC official that a specific article had gathered over 15,000 views, to which she reportedly responded, “Thank you leader” when the official expressed satisfaction with the view count.
The implications of Wang’s actions have sparked concern regarding the integrity of elected officials in the United States. John A. Eisenberg, Assistant Attorney General for National Security, stated that public officials must act in the best interests of the people they represent, making Wang’s alleged liaison with the PRC particularly alarming. He highlighted that it was concerning for an individual in a trusted public role to have accepted directives from a foreign government, especially without disclosing such a relationship.
Wang joined the Arcadia City Council in 2022 and described her initial reasons for entering public office as a genuine love for the city and a commitment to its community. However, in her resignation announcement, she reflected on the events in her personal life that led her to this juncture, describing her relationship with a person she trusts as a factor that drew her away from her duties. She also expressed remorse for her personal mistakes.
The felony charge against Wang carries a maximum sentence of ten years in federal prison. Meanwhile, Yaoning Sun is already serving a four-year prison term, having pleaded guilty in October 2025 for his role as an illegal agent for a foreign government, as per information released by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
The investigation into Wang’s actions is ongoing, conducted by the FBI, and more details may emerge as legal proceedings unfold. This case serves as a stark reminder of the increasing scrutiny over foreign influence in American politics, particularly at the local level, where trust and integrity among public officials are paramount. The impact of such allegations not only affects the individuals involved but also raises broader questions about national security and governance.
As the legal process moves forward, residents of Arcadia and, indeed, the wider community will be watching closely to understand the full implications of Wang’s case and the precedent it may set for future interactions between elected officials and foreign entities.
