Authorities in Missouri have successfully rescued 84 dogs and several other animals from a distressing situation at a breeding facility in Granby, where appalling conditions were discovered. The operation, which took place on 11 May, has resulted in the arrest of 48-year-old Devin Harris, who faces charges related to animal neglect and abandonment.

The rescue was spearheaded by Daisy’s Dane Sanctuary alongside local law enforcement, lasting approximately eight hours. The sanctuary, based in Pleasant Hill, reported that among the animals seized were 83 Great Danes and one mixed breed dog. Tragically, five canines were found deceased at the scene, raising alarms about the conditions these animals endured.

Chrissy Scott, the founder and CEO of Daisy’s Dane Sanctuary, confirmed that most of the rescued dogs require immediate veterinary care, which reflects the extent of the neglect they had suffered. Among the rescued animals were 35 puppies, highlighting the dire situation at the facility where various ages of dogs were found living in squalor.
In addition to the dogs, the rescue operation unearthed a variety of other animals, including two cockatiels, a boa constrictor, four scorpions, a tarantula, and a sugar glider. Scott shared that the living conditions at the site were “extremely poor,” with many of the animals having resorted to foraging through rubbish for sustenance.
The distressing accounts from the scene were echoed by Dr. Zach Patterson, the veterinarian responsible for assessing the animals. He noted that the dogs had been severely neglected, with many arriving underweight, injured, and in need of urgent medical attention. “These dogs haven’t received even the minimal care you would expect,” Dr. Patterson remarked.
As the rescue effort unfolded, Scott described the emotional and physical toll on those involved. “The conditions we encountered were heartbreaking,” she stated, emphasising the dedication shown by the team in their commitment to rehabilitating the animals.
Currently, all rescued animals remain in protective custody as further legal actions are anticipated. The sanctuary has confirmed that they are not yet available for adoption or fostering, as ongoing medical treatment takes precedence during this active criminal investigation.
Harris is currently held in Newton County Jail, awaiting a legal resolution to the charges against him. The Newton County Sheriff’s Office has yet to issue a detailed comment regarding the case, leaving many questions unanswered as the investigation continues.
Daisy’s Dane Sanctuary continues to update the public while caring for the rescued dogs, underscoring the importance of animal welfare and the need for accountability in such tragic cases. The procedure followed not only highlights the significance of animal rescue organisations but also serves as a grim reminder of the conditions that some animals endure under irresponsible breeding practices.
