Donald Trump has set his sights on completing renovations of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in time for the Fourth of July, a celebration marking 250 years of American independence. The former president recently shared two images on Truth Social depicting the ongoing project, including a visual representation of the pool’s new colour, dubbed “American Flag Blue.”

In his posts, Trump referred to the reflecting pool, which sits near the iconic Lincoln Memorial, as being in a poorly maintained state, describing it as “filthy” and “dirty.” His criticism followed a visit from a friend from Germany, who commented unfavourably on the pool’s condition. These sentiments were echoed during a recent Oval Office event where he announced his intentions to revitalise the structure.

On May 7, the official White House Instagram account posted pictures of Trump visiting the renovation site, interacting with workers and observing the ongoing work. The White House underscored the renovations as part of the broader initiative to “make D.C. beautiful again,” and provided a glimpse into the work happening at this historical landmark.

During his visit, Trump detailed the ambitious plans to transform the pool’s grey stone appearance into a vibrant blue reminiscent of a swimming pool. He expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “It’s really beautiful, and it’s going to be fantastic. It’s going to look better than it did in 1922 when it was built.”
The undertaking was initially projected to take up to three years and cost around $300 million. However, Trump claimed to have found a more efficient approach by enlisting contractors he had previously collaborated with, which he estimated would bring the cost down to between $1.5 million and $2 million. In his explanation, he noted the restoration processes had already begun, including scrubbing the granite surface that has endured since the pool’s construction.
The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has undergone renovations in the past, including a closure in 2010 that lasted two years. The improvements planned for this iconic site promise to enhance its aesthetic appeal for both locals and visitors, reflecting Trump’s commitment to revitalising significant cultural landmarks in Washington, D.C.
In addition to the reflecting pool project, Trump is also engaged in renovations to the East Wing of the White House. Plans for this space include the addition of a ballroom, a movie theatre, and office facilities for First Lady Melania Trump and her staff. Recently, Trump shared updates on social media, asserting that construction of the ballroom is progressing ahead of schedule.
The overall renovation costs for the East Wing and additional projects are anticipated to reach as much as $400 million, with funding expected to come from private donations contributed by Trump himself and several major corporations.
As the July 4 deadline approaches, stakeholders, including local citizens and history enthusiasts, are watching with keen interest to see how this restoration project will unfold. The renovations of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool not only aim to enhance its visual appeal but also to add a sense of pride as the nation gears up to celebrate its rich history and independence.
