Sheinelle Jones, co-host of “Today with Jenna & Sheinelle,” has opened up about the emotional challenges she faced over Mother’s Day this year, following the loss of her husband, Uche Ojeh. Uche passed away in May 2025, aged 45, after a private battle with glioblastoma. This year marked the first occasion Jones experienced Mother’s Day without him.

In an emotionally charged conversation during the show, Jones candidly shared her experience with co-host Jenna Bush Hager. She acknowledged the difficulty of navigating such special occasions after a profound loss, admitting that Mother’s Day proved to be particularly painful. “I’ll be honest with you, it was kind of tough for me,” Jones reflected. “I think when you have firsts — and Mother’s Day was a first for me since Uche passed — you fortify your heart.”

Jones elaborated on her thoughts, indicating that while some holidays can be anticipated and prepared for, others catch one off guard with their intensity of emotion. “Christmas and Easter, you kind of fortify yourself. But there are some holidays that you don’t see coming that are harder than you think. Mother’s Day was brutal,” she explained.
Bush Hager empathised with her co-host’s experience, highlighting how Uche often took charge of celebrating such occasions. “Well, because really, he was probably the one that did everything,” she remarked. Jones readily agreed, reminiscing, “He would be the one, correct. ‘Guys, we gotta get some cards!’ I think we all quietly realised it.”
Despite the absence of her husband, Jones found solace in the achievements of her children, which she described as a significant part of her Mother’s Day experience. She spoke with pride about her daughter Clara, who had recently participated in a recital and had the opportunity to interview celebrities such as Rihanna at the Met Gala. “I got a little teary-eyed because part of me wondered — and I can only hope — she saw me earlier that day,” Jones shared, reflecting on the pride she felt as Clara accomplished her own milestones.
Jones’s affinity for mother’s pride resonated throughout the show as she described watching her children engage in various activities on Mother’s Day. “My little guy had a game at 9 a.m., Kayin had a game at 7 p.m., Clara had dance, so I couldn’t stay in bed,” she recounted with a mix of nostalgia and joy. The day’s events, including Clara’s dance performance and Kayin’s return from an injury to play in his game, brought her a sense of comfort and healing.
Bush Hager praised Jones for finding joy in her children amidst her grief. “Which is so ironic you found your joy in your kids, watching them and being proud of them, which is what Mother’s Day really should be about,” she noted, reflecting on the essence of such celebrations.
Jones affirmed this sentiment, believing she successfully navigated the complexities of Mother’s Day. Additionally, she has received immense love and support from her children. Just last month, they surprised her on-air to celebrate the launch of her book, “Through Mom’s Eyes: Simple Wisdom from Mothers Who Raised Extraordinary Humans,” further illuminating the bond she shares with them.
As Jones continues to share her journey with grief and motherhood, her honesty remains a testament to the emotional resilience she embodies. Through sharing her experiences, she not only raises awareness about the grieving process but also highlights the strength found in familial love and celebration. In her reflections, she balances joy with sorrow, embodying the reality that while loss is challenging, love persists in the memories and accomplishments of those we cherish.
