In a touching testament to the transformative power of compassion and care, Nathan Schloegl, a former Coast Guard member, has found his life’s purpose as a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nurse. His journey into nursing was sparked by a deeply personal experience involving his newborn son, Luca, who spent six days in the NICU after birth.

During a recent interview on the television programme *Today*, Nathan candidly shared how his perspective on nursing shifted during those tense days in the hospital. Initially, he had no interest in pursuing a career in healthcare. However, witnessing the dedication and professionalism of the NICU staff during a challenging period for his family ignited a passion within him that he never expected to have.

Reflecting on his emotions during those worrying hospital hours, Nathan recalled feeling overwhelmed and anxious as Luca was placed on respiratory support. “I really didn’t know what NICU was, and it turned into a bit of a whirlwind,” he admitted. Struggling to cope with the situation, Nathan felt a persistent fear of losing sight of his son amidst the medical complexities.
The experience became less daunting thanks to the compassionate care provided by the nurses. Nathan particularly remembers Luca’s first nurse, whose calm and reassuring demeanour helped pacify his fears. “She kept it so simple for me and answered my questions in ways that I understood,” he said. This connection not only helped him during a turbulent time but also left a lasting impression that would steer him towards a career in nursing.
Once Luca was discharged from hospital care, Nathan felt a compelling urge to give back and contribute positively to the lives of others similarly affected. Within weeks, he enrolled in community college classes focused on nursing. His determination saw him quickly transition from a secure job in private security to the challenging yet rewarding realm of NICU nursing.
Now, working at Corewell Health Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, Nathan finds himself reunited with the same nurses who tended to his son during their critical first days. “It’s a unique feeling to work alongside them now. They saved my son’s life, and I’m now part of that pivotal process for other families,” he expressed.
While some may perceive Nathan’s extensive tattoos as counterproductive to a professional image in healthcare, he believes it serves to strengthen his rapport with patients and their families, particularly fathers who may seek comfort in understanding. “I don’t necessarily look the part, but that helps me connect with them,” he explained. “It allows me to engage with fathers who may feel out of place in this environment.”
Each day presents new challenges in the NICU, and Nathan is aware of the emotional highs and lows that accompany this work. “It’s difficult work. It can be emotionally overwhelming and physically demanding,” he acknowledged. Yet, he remains committed to his role, finding solace in the knowledge that he is helping to care for vulnerable lives during critical moments.
Through his journey, Nathan Schloegl exemplifies how personal experiences can reshape one’s career path and inspire a desire to give back to the community. His story not only highlights the vital role of NICU staff but also serves as a reminder of the profound impact that kindness and professionalism can have on families during their most distressing times. With a commitment to nurturing those in need, Nathan continues to make a positive difference, embodying the spirit of care that once comforted him in his own time of uncertainty.
