A new documentary titled *Louder Than Guns* is currently making waves in select cinemas, spotlighting the deeply entrenched issues surrounding gun rights and gun violence in the United States. The film follows Ketch Secor, lead singer of the acclaimed band Old Crow Medicine Show, as he embarks on a cross-country journey alongside journalist David Greene. Their aim is to facilitate meaningful conversations regarding the divisive topic of gun safety.

Secor, known for co-writing the chart-topping country hit “Wagon Wheel,” describes himself as “the man for the job” when it comes to initiating these crucial dialogues. He believes the audience at his concerts reflects a broad spectrum of American society, making them an ideal demographic to engage in discussions about this pressing issue.
The motivation behind the documentary became even more personal for Secor following a tragic mass shooting at the Covenant School in Nashville in 2023. At the time of the incident, his children were attending a different school nearby, reinforcing the urgency he felt to speak out against gun violence. This prompted him to pen an op-ed for The New York Times, arguing that country music could play a pivotal role in shifting America’s obsession with firearms.
At the outset of *Louder Than Guns*, Secor candidly acknowledges his mixed feelings about taking on this responsibility. “I guess I feel like I’m the man for the job, and I don’t want this job,” he confesses. Greene, having a background as a host for NPR’s *Morning Edition*, proposed the idea to Secor, noting the potential impact of combining the unifying power of country music with discussions involving a variety of viewpoints on gun violence.
As they travelled for performances, Secor and Greene gathered groups from diverse backgrounds and ideologies. These conversations meant bringing together people who would typically stand on opposite sides of the gun control debate. Among the stories shared, a mother who lost two children to gun violence confronted a woman who argued that the root issues of violence should be addressed instead of focusing solely on the guns.
The documentary captures the complexity of these exchanges as parents who directly faced the Covenant School tragedy share their experiences with gun enthusiasts. Secor and Greene also visited schools to engage with students and made stops at gun shops to understand the perspectives of employees and owners alike.
Although participants in these discussions may not have drastically shifted their views, the intent was to foster an environment that encourages dialogue. “We need more conversations about guns,” Secor notes. His perspective has evolved throughout this process, recognising that open-minded discussions are crucial, even if they don’t lead to immediate consensus.
Greene shared how his views shifted dramatically over the past few years. “Two, three years ago, I would have considered myself someone who was like, ‘Assault weapons ban? One hundred percent, I’m behind it,’” he remarked. “But now, I think I’m afraid of how my family, my own wife, my friends might judge me because I’ve become more open-minded in ways I never, ever expected.”
As the film progresses, Secor begins performing “Louder Than Guns” at his concerts using a violin inscribed with the names of victims from the Covenant School shooting, blending music with activism. This emotional gesture gives him hope, fostering a sense that, despite their differences, individuals can share a common desire for safety and wellbeing.
“There’s a deep need for our kids to feel safe again in America,” Secor states emphatically. “These days have got to get behind us. It’s time for our kids to feel safe. That’s what we’re gonna do.”
*Louder Than Guns* made its premiere on May 8 at DCTV Firehouse Cinema in New York City, and it continues to roll out across North America, aiming to spark conversations about an issue that affects countless lives nationwide. The film not only seeks to ignite dialogues but also highlights the power of music as a tool for healing and understanding amidst a tumultuous landscape.
