A New York woman, Melissa Kerry Samnath, was tragically pronounced dead shortly after her arrival at a hospital in Jamaica on 29 April. Melissa, who was in the Caribbean nation to celebrate her birthday, reportedly contacted her relatives just hours before she died, pleading for help.

Local police were alerted to the incident following Melissa’s drop-off at Cornwall Regional Hospital in St. James. The Jamaica Constabulary Force confirmed in a news release that she had arrived at the facility with assistance from her husband, Dane Watson. Authorities are currently seeking Watson, who is considered a person of interest in the ongoing investigation surrounding Samnath’s death.
An autopsy conducted on 6 May revealed that the cause of death was multiple blunt force trauma to the head, signalling a violent end to what should have been a joyful occasion. In the course of their investigation, detectives found physical evidence related to the case at a residence in Norwood, St. James. Reports indicate that personal belongings belonging to Melissa were located at the site, alongside pools of blood.
Despite the presence of this disturbing evidence, neighbours reportedly did not hear any signs of conflict or distress in the vicinity at the time of the incident, which has raised questions about the circumstances of her death. Just hours prior to being taken to the hospital, approximately an hour before her birthday, Melissa sent alarming texts to her family in New York.
Her last message, described by witnesses, stated, “I need you to call the cops. … Look at my location.” This plea for help has prompted deep concern among her family, who are struggling to comprehend the events that led to her tragic death.
“She didn’t deserve that,” expressed Melissa’s niece, who was among the family members to identify her prior to the autopsy. The niece painted a picture of a caring and supportive individual, stating, “My aunt was very helpful and family-oriented. When my grandfather died, she was the one taking care of my other aunt and grandma.”
As the investigation continues, police are urging Dane Watson to contact the Freeport Police Station or any nearby police station. The urgency follows the suspect’s alleged departure after dropping off his wife at the hospital, which raises further suspicions regarding his involvement.
In light of the tragic loss, a GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist with funeral and memorial expenses. As of now, this fundraiser has managed to gather over £8,000 of its £13,000 target. The organizer of the campaign described Melissa as a “strong, loving, and unforgettable woman whose warmth touched everyone around her.” The page highlights how her loss has left a profound void within her family.
“We are preparing to honour Melissa with the peaceful and beautiful farewell she deserves,” they wrote. The campaign has garnered support not just from family and friends but from a wider community touched by Melissa’s life.
No immediate response was available from representatives of the U.S. Embassy in Jamaica, the St. James Municipal Corporation, or the Jamaica Ministry of Tourism at the time of writing.
This incident has reignited concerns about domestic violence and safety during travels, as friends and family come to terms with this tragic event. Support for those experiencing similar circumstances is critical, emphasising the importance of outreach and assistance for individuals facing domestic issues.
As the investigation unfolds, the family, in their time of mourning, continues to seek answers and justice for Melissa.
