Ofelia Ali, a 36-year-old nurse, is on a mission to raise awareness about lupus after enduring a challenging health journey that began during a family holiday in Mexico in 2017. During that trip, Ali began experiencing severe symptoms that would ultimately lead to a significant health crisis.
Her ordeal commenced abruptly when she developed a fever, followed by intense pain in her arm that felt as though it was broken. Unable to move without agony, Ali soon found herself facing a series of debilitating symptoms—including swelling in her hands, hair loss, fluid retention in her joints, chest pain, and overwhelming fatigue.

Reflecting on her experience, Ali explained, “Even a light touch felt like an electric shock. The pain was one of the hardest parts. However, fatigue was perhaps the most persistent and debilitating of all my symptoms. It has a profound impact on my daily life.”

Prior to her illness, Ali described herself as an active individual who enjoyed running and worked in physically demanding jobs. The sudden onset of her health issues was alarming, and she initially received a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis. However, Ali later questioned the accuracy of this diagnosis, as treatments would only offer temporary relief while her symptoms evolved in ways that didn’t align with typical rheumatoid arthritis.
“I felt immensely frustrated not having clear answers, particularly when enduring so much pain,” she recounted. “It was as if I knew something more serious was at play, but it took time for the realities of my condition to be acknowledged.”
The turning point in Ali’s journey occurred when she learned that her aunt had been diagnosed with lupus. She began to connect the dots regarding her own symptoms and decided to inform her doctor about her family history of the condition. Her persistence paid off when a rheumatologist finally concluded that her symptoms were consistent with lupus, a diagnosis that brought both relief and trepidation.
“Lupus is an autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system attacks its own tissues,” Ali explained. “It can cause inflammation, facial rashes, joint pain, chest pains, and even cognitive issues, among other symptoms.” The diagnosis, while overwhelming, allowed her to better understand her condition and seek appropriate treatment.
To manage her lupus, Ali now undergoes at-home infusions with Saphnelo, a treatment that greatly enhances her quality of life. “Having an at-home treatment means I no longer need to rearrange my work or travel schedule around infusion days, which is a significant change for me,” she shared.
Through her experience, Ali is keen on advocating for others affected by lupus, urging them not to dismiss their instincts if something feels off regarding their health. “It’s important to fight for your health and seek further evaluations if you feel misdiagnosed,” she emphasises, encouraging individuals to grant themselves patience, as living with an invisible illness can be difficult to articulate to those around them.
Ali is dedicated to increasing lupus awareness in the hopes of providing support and hope to those living with the condition. “Lupus manifests differently for everyone,” she noted. “You might appear perfectly healthy on the outside while navigating daily struggles on the inside. The fatigue can be overwhelming and is often challenging to explain to others.”
The advocacy for lupus awareness is not just about shedding light on the condition itself; Ali aims to support efforts for developing new treatments that can enhance the quality of life for individuals with lupus. “It’s critical that those unfamiliar with lupus understand that it is a genuine condition. For many of us, simply making it through the day is a significant achievement,” she stated.
As Ali continues her mission to spread awareness, her personal journey serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of self-advocacy and the need for greater understanding of autoimmune illnesses. Through her story, she hopes to inspire others to seek the answers they deserve and to shine a light on a condition that affects many lives beyond what meets the eye.
