The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that a recent excavation of a property owned by Susan Flores, the mother of convicted killer Paul Flores, did not yield the remains of Kristin Smart. This search has drawn significant attention, especially given previous statements suggesting that human remains might have been present at the site at some stage.

Kristin Smart, a student at California Polytechnic State University, disappeared in 1996 under mysterious circumstances. Paul Flores was found guilty of her murder in 2022 and subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment the following year. His father, Ruben Flores, faced charges but was acquitted of being an accessory to the crime.

The investigation into Kristin’s disappearance continues to be a priority for local authorities. Following a search warrant obtained by the sheriff’s department, officials recently combed through the home in Arroyo Grande. A press release issued by the sheriff’s office on Saturday indicated that no remains were found during this latest operation.
Earlier assessments had highlighted the presence of certain soil compositions that suggested the possible past presence of human remains. In a statement made during a press briefing on May 8, Sheriff Ian Parkinson remarked, “We believe that based on what we’re looking at evidence-wise, scientific evidence, that human remains were there at one time or still are.” He emphasised the nature of the compounds detected, which are typically associated with decomposition.
This latest search was not the first conducted at the Flores residence; previous inspections had concluded with similarly unfruitful results. However, detectives proceeded with renewed diligence after receiving new evidence and investigative leads. “We made the agreement that we are not leaving that house until we are sure that we have checked everything,” Ian Parkinson explained regarding the latest search effort.
The details surrounding Kristin’s case have been harrowing. During the trial, the prosecution shared that Flores had raped Smart and subsequently killed her. Prosecutors claimed that he enlisted the help of his father to conceal her body beneath a deck on their property. The conviction of Paul Flores represented a significant development in the long-standing quest for justice by Kristin’s family, who described the arrest as “bittersweet.”
Kristin’s parents expressed a glimmer of hope upon hearing news of the arrest of both Paul and Ruben Flores in 2021. They stated that it was “impossible to put into words” the significance of this moment for their family and articulated their desire for it to be a pivotal step towards finally bringing their daughter home.
Despite these ongoing efforts, Susan Flores has not been implicated in any criminal activities related to her son’s actions. Legal proceedings regarding the matter eventually led to significant public interest, as many have closely followed developments in the case over the years.
Authorities emphasised their commitment to resolving Kristin Smart’s disappearance and are still keen to discover the truth behind the tragedy that has affected many lives. As investigations proceed, the sheriff’s office has indicated that they will evaluate any findings from the recent search, though no further information will be released until new developments emerge.
As the search for justice continues, the community remains engaged, hoping for a resolution to a case that has lingered for decades. The authorities have pledged to keep the pressure on as they strive to bring closure to Kristin’s loved ones and ensure justice is served.
