A mother along with her two teenage children has been missing for several weeks after embarking on a camping trip in Italy. Sonia Bottacchiari, aged 49, and her children, aged 14 and 16, disappeared on April 20 while travelling from the Piacenza area to Friuli Venezia Giulia for a short holiday.

Bottacchiari, reportedly bringing their four dogs along, had been due to return home by April 24. However, none of their mobile phones have been active since their departure, raising concerns over their wellbeing. According to local media including La Repubblica and Il Fatto Quotidiano, the family’s last known whereabouts were linked to their attempted arrival at a campsite in Gemona.

On May 6, authorities discovered Bottacchiari’s vehicle, a Chevrolet, in the city of Tarcento, further complicating the mystery of their disappearance. Bottacchiari’s ex-husband, Yuri Groppi, revealed that he had received a text from her on the day they went missing, informing him of their journey. He also received a message from his son, stating, “Twenty minutes and we’re here. Bye, Dad,” alongside another communication from his daughter regarding school.
Yuri, who has been separated from Bottacchiari for over a decade, took steps to report their absence when they did not arrive at the campsite as planned. Upon contacting the campsite directly, Yuri discovered they had no record of reservations for his ex-wife and the children. This prompted him to file a missing persons report with local authorities.
Officials in Piacenza responded by launching an investigation into the situation, expanding their focus to consider the possibility of child abduction. Reports indicate that Bottacchiari had recently resigned from her job and accessed funds from her employer prior to the trip, which has raised additional questions surrounding her disappearance.
Moreover, a home visit by a social worker just a day after the family’s disappearance revealed that Bottacchiari had stocked her residence with supplies intended for her father, who resides with her. The social worker’s findings prompted a formal complaint to be filed on April 27.
Yuri Groppi has speculated that Bottacchiari may have gained an interest in a new lifestyle, allegedly influenced by someone she had recently met. He suggested that this newfound adventurous inclination could have played a role in her decision to take the trip.
As of now, the search for Sonia Bottacchiari and her children continues, with local law enforcement dedicating resources to uncover any leads that might help locate the missing family members. The case has drawn significant media attention, raising public awareness and concern for their safety.
Families and community members in the areas affected have expressed their support, hoping for a swift resolution and a safe return for Sonia, her son, and daughter. Authorities have asked anyone with potential information regarding their whereabouts to come forward.
As investigations progress, it remains essential for the public to stay informed on this troubling situation. Further developments are awaited from law enforcement agencies, who continue to pursue all possible avenues in locating the missing family.
