In an inspiring tale of resilience and hope, 20-year-old Jennifer Alverado has shared how the music of K-pop sensation BTS played a significant role in her recovery journey following a double lung transplant. The operation, which took place at Stanford Medicine Children’s Health in October 2024, marked a major turning point in Alverado’s life after a battle with pulmonary hypertension since she was 15 years old.

Diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension in 2021, Alverado found herself under the weight of a relentless illness that severely curtailed her ability to engage with life. The diagnosis, described as high blood pressure in the lungs, left her constantly fatigued and unable to participate in activities that used to bring her joy. During these trying times, Alverado turned to BTS as a source of inspiration and comfort, listening to their music and immersing herself in their performances as a means of escape from her struggles.

“I would watch all their interviews, live streams, and whatever BTS content I could find while I was in hospital,” Alverado explained in an interview with PEOPLE. “Their music and videos helped block out the negativity during such difficult moments in my life.” Despite her illness, Alverado attempted to learn the band’s choreography, even while reliant on supplementary oxygen.
Her health took a turn for the better in October 2022 when she was placed on the national lung transplant waiting list. However, a subsequent improvement in her condition led medical professionals to believe she was no longer in immediate need of a transplant. Though her health fluctuated, Alverado returned to her home in Indio, California, roughly 10 hours from the hospital. The journey was not yet over, as she was placed back on the waiting list for a lung transplant in July 2024, ultimately leading to her surgery later that year.
Following her successful transplant, Alverado was unexpectedly surprised by the hospital staff with tickets to see BTS live on Stanford’s campus on 16 May. This event will mark a monumental moment for her, as it represents the fulfilment of a dream she had since she was 15 years old. “I never thought this day would come, and now I’m so grateful,” she said, reflecting on the journey that brought her to this point.
Alverado expressed deep admiration for BTS, emphasising not just their music but also their positive messaging about mental health. “My goal is to reach out to them and share my story one day,” she shared. The anticipation of the concert has become a thrill for her as she looks forward to hearing songs from their newly released album “ARIRANG”, which debuted in March. “I memorised every song in just one month!” she remarked enthusiastically.
Significantly, one of the band’s songs, “Dis-ease”, had a profound impact on her during her medical challenges. “The lyrics resonated with me—‘I’m sick and tired but don’t want to mess up because life goes on.’ Those words kept me moving forward through the pain and struggles,” Alverado recalled.
While in the hospital, Alverado made the most of her circumstances, even hosting dance parties with her fellow patients. “I would do my best to dance despite having my oxygen tank. Turning away from the negativity was essential for me, and BTS was a huge part of that journey,” she said, reflecting on how she coped with her condition.
The opportunity to see BTS perform live represents not only the culmination of years of longing but also a chance to express her gratitude for the role their music played in her healing process. “It’s a dream come true,” Alverado stated. “I hope to meet the band someday and thank them for how they helped me survive. They’re more than just a band to me; they’ve been my lifeline.”
Jennifer Alverado’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the impact that music and fandom can have during challenging times. As she prepares for the concert, her journey of recovery continues to inspire those around her, proving that even in the face of adversity, hope and joy can be found through passion and perseverance.
