In a deeply troubling tale from Ashford, England, 18-year-old Rubie Boyton continues to navigate the aftermath of a life-threatening heart condition that went undiagnosed when she was just 16. The young girl, who has faced overwhelming challenges since her medical crisis, experienced seizures and ultimately cardiac arrest, resulting in severe brain damage.
Rubie Boyton first exhibited alarming symptoms at home when she suffered two seizures in quick succession. Her mother, Kim Tucker, sought medical attention, but the initial response dismissed the incidents as mere anxiety and failed to initiate further testing. This misdiagnosis would have serious repercussions.
The situation escalated dramatically in May 2024 when Rubie collapsed while at a local park. A friend promptly administered CPR until emergency services could arrive, and she was subsequently airlifted to King’s College Hospital in London, where she was placed in a medically induced coma for urgent treatment.
Following comprehensive medical assessments, doctors diagnosed Rubie with catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (CPVT), a rare genetic heart rhythm condition that can lead to fainting, seizures, and sudden cardiac arrest in previously healthy individuals. Unfortunately, during her cardiac arrest, Rubie’s brain was deprived of oxygen for an agonising 31 minutes, resulting in extensive neurological damage.
Upon regaining consciousness, Rubie faced the harrowing reality of being unable to communicate or move. She developed dystonia, a neurological disorder characterised by involuntary muscle contractions, which further complicates her situation by affecting her ability to speak and move freely.
Reflecting on the series of events that led to her daughter’s predicament, Kim expressed both anger and devastation. “Rubie didn’t deserve this,” she shared. Kim described the frustration stemming from the initial dismissal of Rubie’s seizures, lamenting, “I am so angry. NHS 111 suggested paracetamol and didn’t recommend further checks. I wish I’d pushed for more tests.”
While significant challenges remain, Rubie has shown resilience. Two years post-crisis, she remains unable to walk or talk, but there have been promising signs of improvement. Recently, she has regained some reflexes and has developed a method of communication by blinking.
“Rubie has made massive improvements. Sometimes I fail to notice them day-to-day, but when I see old videos from the hospital, the difference is striking,” said Kim. “She is far more aware now, and her movements show more purpose than before.”
Currently, Rubie requires care four days a week, and in a bid to prioritise their daughter’s recovery, Kim and her husband have left their jobs. Their hope remains that continued treatment might facilitate further progress. Rubie is now receiving various specialised therapies, including hyperbaric oxygen therapy, physiotherapy, and hydrotherapy.
“We are trying everything we can think of to make a difference. Realistically, I don’t expect her to return to her former self, but we must explore every option available,” Kim expressed, highlighting the emotional toll the ordeal has taken on their family. “It’s been incredibly challenging,” she added, extending gratitude to the caregivers who have been instrumental in their journey.
In addition to navigating medical treatments, the family has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the costs of Rubie’s specialised therapies that insurance does not cover. As of now, they have succeeded in raising over £25,000.
