As Mother’s Day approaches, an Australian charity named Bears of Hope is gearing up for its annual high tea celebrations, honouring mothers who have experienced the devastating loss of a child. These heartfelt gatherings serve as a beacon of hope and support for women navigating the challenges that come with such grief.

Bears of Hope is dedicated to providing care for families grappling with the loss of a baby. These special events, set to take place across Australia, allow mothers of all ages – including those whose losses date back many years – to connect with one another, share their stories, and create a sense of community. Jessica Rogers, who plans to attend one of the 18 events this year, emphasised the importance of these occasions for healing. Her own journey began with the stillbirth of her daughter, Willow, at 24 weeks.
“It’s about bringing that community connection,” Rogers explained to ABC News Australia. Participants in the high tea events receive a keepsake gift, and those who choose to can have place cards inscribed with their baby’s name. This gesture allows mothers to openly express their grief in a compassionate and understanding environment.
Abby Dante, who is orchestrating an event in Laurieton, New South Wales, highlighted the need for increased awareness around pregnancy and infant loss. “It brings a real awareness to the fact that it is much more common than people can begin to understand,” she noted. The significance of such recognition for grieving mothers is paramount, especially during a time typically celebrated for motherhood.
Jennifer Thomas, Bears of Hope’s fundraising and events coordinator, became involved with the charity after the stillbirth of her son, Bailey, 17 years ago. Reflecting on the evolution of these Mother’s Day gatherings over the past 15 years, she noted a fundamental shift in societal attitudes. “There’s a void for moms once they have lost a baby,” Thomas shared, explaining how the events help fill the emotional gap that often accompanies such loss. She elaborated on the challenges of not being recognised as a mother during this poignant holiday.
The high tea events also serve as a vital space for women who lost children decades ago, offering them a chance to connect and find validation for their experiences. Many of these mothers did not have the support or acknowledgment they needed at the time of their losses. “These are the women who were told in hospital rooms, ‘There, there, you can try again,'” Thomas reflected. For them, the current gatherings represent a long-overdue opportunity for recognition and empathy.
Fanoula Anasta, another coordinator with Bears of Hope, echoed these sentiments. After losing her baby, Luke, in 2021, she has witnessed the impact of the Mother’s Day teas first-hand. Anasta shared that some women attending the events are in their 60s and 70s, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to talk about their losses, which was not possible in previous generations. “In my day and age, we could never talk about it, thanks for talking about it,” she recounted hearing from attendees.
The bonds created in such an environment are profound. Anasta noted that the high tea events facilitate long-lasting friendships among mothers who have suffered similar tragedies, providing an essential outlet for mourning. “The grief doesn’t get better, it gets different,” she remarked, acknowledging the complex nature of living with loss.
Ultimately, the Mother’s Day high teas organised by Bears of Hope are not merely about commemorating loss; they celebrate the beautiful memories of the babies who are no longer with us. “It is actually a beautiful afternoon with women sharing their stories about their beautiful babies … we are keeping our babies’ legacy alive,” Anasta concluded.
As these events draw near, Bears of Hope continues its commendable work in creating a nurturing space for mothers to find solace among one another. Through shared experiences and newfound connections, these women are reminded that, even in grief, they are not alone. The charity’s ongoing commitment to supporting families through their darkest moments remains a source of hope and healing in the community.
