Michelle Monaghan, renowned for her role in the HBO series “The White Lotus,” is using her personal experiences to educate children about sun safety. After being diagnosed with melanoma approximately 15 years ago, she has embarked on a mission to raise awareness about the risks of sun exposure and the importance of skin protection.

Reflecting on her youth in rural Iowa, Monaghan shared how her summer activities often involved extensive sun exposure. “After a long winter, we saw it as an opportunity to get a tan,” the actress recalled. This behaviour was exacerbated by her frequent visits to local tanning beds during her teenage years, which she describes as a popular pastime. Unfortunately, she attributes these early choices to her later diagnosis of melanoma, prompting her to approach the subject with greater seriousness.

The catalyst for her advocacy became evident when Monaghan noticed harmful trends on social media affecting her 17-year-old daughter, Willow. “I noticed her feed was filled with influencers promoting tanning beds, which have been shown to triple the risk of melanoma,” she said. Recognising the potential dangers these messages could pose, Monaghan engaged in a heartfelt discussion with her daughter regarding the importance of sun safety.
As part of her commitment to skin cancer awareness, Monaghan is also set to receive an award from the Skin Cancer Foundation later this month for her efforts in advocacy. In conjunction with this, she has released a new children’s book titled “A Kids Book About Sun Safety.” This publication is part of a series that aims to simplify complex topics for younger audiences, a mission driven by her experiences with her own children, Willow and her 12-year-old son, Tommy.
In the book, Monaghan aims to bridge the gap between enjoying outdoor activities and understanding the significance of sun protection. “There was a disconnect; I wanted my children to love being active outdoors while also being aware of the need for protection,” she explained. Her own childhood in Winthrop, Iowa, where she spent her summers in the sun, made her keenly aware of the need to instil these lessons in her children.
Monaghan’s battle with melanoma began with a spot on the back of her calf, a result she believes is directly linked to her tanning bed usage. Initially dismissing the spot, it was her husband, Peter White, who urged her to consult a medical professional. “When I told him I had melanoma, his reaction made me realise the gravity of the situation,” she recounted. After the removal of the malignant mole and a portion of the surrounding muscle, Monaghan was fortunate to remain cancer-free.
Today, Monaghan remains vigilant about sun protection not only in her personal life but also during her professional engagements. While filming “White Lotus” in Thailand, she and her co-stars took proactive measures to ensure their safety under the sun. “We kept sunscreen in our characters’ beach bags and made sure to reapply as necessary,” she stated. The show’s director, Mike White, encouraged cast members to prioritise their comfort, underscoring the importance of sun safety on set.
At home, Monaghan has integrated sun safety into her family’s routine. “My children understand how serious my diagnosis was,” she shared. They have adopted practices such as consistent sunscreen application and regular dermatological check-ups as integral parts of their healthcare, akin to more traditional hygiene practices like brushing teeth.
To further encourage her children to adopt sun safety measures, Monaghan suggests allowing them the autonomy to choose their products. “Let them pick out their sunscreen; it makes them more likely to use it,” she advised. Her minimum recommendation includes using a broad-spectrum SPF of at least 30, emphasising that early education on these topics is essential. “If you have skin, you need protection,” she concluded, reinforcing the necessity of sun safety across all age groups.
Through her new book and continuous advocacy, Michelle Monaghan is making significant strides toward fostering a safer, more informed approach to sun exposure among children. Her personal journey serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of prevention and awareness in combating skin cancer.
