A tragic incident has rocked the community of Grand Rapids, Michigan, after an 18-year-old was accused of fatally shooting two individuals during a children’s soccer game. The shooting, which occurred on May 5, left a mother of eight and a teenage boy dead, prompting an immediate investigation by local law enforcement.

The victims have been identified as 39-year-old Savanah Villarreal and 15-year-old Jeremiah Cuevas-Griffin. The police responded to reports of the shooting at Southwest Elementary School at approximately 6:40 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered Villarreal and Cuevas-Griffin suffering from severe gunshot wounds. Despite the best efforts of emergency responders, Cuevas-Griffin was pronounced dead at the scene, while Villarreal later succumbed to her injuries at a hospital.
The suspect, Rafael Martinez-Lopez, allegedly fled following the shooting but was later apprehended by police. He is currently facing two counts of open murder, two felony firearm charges, and three additional weapons-related charges. Authorities stated that Martinez-Lopez is scheduled for arraignment later this week.
According to interim police chief Joe Trigg, the incident began when Martinez-Lopez attempted to join a soccer game played by local children. After being refused entry into the game, he became engaged in a verbal altercation with the young players. It was during this heated exchange that he reportedly produced a firearm and shot Cuevas-Griffin.
Villarreal’s sister, Angelita Tierrablanca, spoke of her sibling’s heroism. She indicated that Villarreal had been keeping an eye on the children due to prior unsettling incidents at the park. “She was so selfless, she loved children,” Tierrablanca said, emphasising the depth of Villarreal’s compassion and commitment to protecting the youth.
Trigg added that the incident was witnessed by several children, many of whom are likely to be deeply affected by the events they witnessed. Reports indicate that there were at least seven or eight young witnesses, creating an undeniably distressing atmosphere in what should have been an innocent and enjoyable activity.
The mother of Jeremiah Cuevas-Griffin described Villarreal as an integral part of their family, stating, “She gave her life to save my son.” Mildred Griffen relayed how Jeremiah had viewed Villarreal as his aunt, explaining that she had been a constant presence in his life, providing care and support.
Jeremiah’s uncle, Tony Cuevas, expressed his sorrow, stating, “I’m going through some loss. All in all a very good kid, man, very loved. I’m definitely gonna miss him.” His family is grappling with the reality of a young life taken too soon and a beloved family friend lost in such a tragic manner.
In the wake of this incident, Grand Rapids Public Schools announced that classes at Southwest Elementary School will resume on May 8, while classes at Southwest Middle High School restarted earlier on May 7. The school district is offering counselling and support services to students as they navigate this traumatic experience.
The police department continues to investigate, with the Major Case Team working diligently to gather more information.
