Within hours, Bogey’s health began to deteriorate. Julian was devastated when she learned from her fiancé’s father that Bogey’s chances of survival had plummeted to just 50 percent. “I was at a Cartier Mother’s Day event with my family when I received the call and completely broke down,” she recounted. “We packed a bag, grabbed Bogey’s favourite bear toy, and drove up as fast as we could because I was terrified we wouldn’t make it in time to say goodbye.”

Upon their arrival at the veterinary clinic, Julian described the emotional scene as Bogey, though clearly unwell, managed to greet them with a flick of his tail, showcasing the loving spirit he always carried. “Seeing such a happy, energetic dog suddenly hiding in corners and wanting to sleep was heartbreaking,” she said.

By early Sunday morning, Julian received another distressing call indicating Bogey may have suffered a seizure, prompting a rush back to the emergency veterinary clinic. Using a photo they had taken, they learned that Bogey had ingested an Amanita phalloides, more commonly known as the death cap mushroom—a species notorious for its high fatality rate in dogs. The alarming reality soon struck Julian and her family: the toxins had spread too extensively within Bogey’s system, causing liver failure and shock.

With heavy hearts, Julian and her family made the difficult decision to allow Bogey to pass away peacefully. They took the time to carry him outside to experience the sunshine one final time and let the dog have one last stroll. Even in his weakened state, Bogey managed to pick up his favourite bear and presented it to the veterinarian, a gesture that appeared to express gratitude amidst the tragedy.

In the aftermath of losing Bogey, Julian turned to TikTok to share her sorrow and raise awareness about the dangers of wild mushrooms that can threaten pets. Her poignant videos, which have garnered significant attention, carry a powerful message. “Even if you think you got everything out of their mouth, it’s still important to take them to the emergency vet immediately because even the smallest amount can become dangerous very quickly,” she advised.
