Brittney Griner, the celebrated WNBA star, has opened up about the emotional letter she penned to her wife, Cherelle, during her harrowing imprisonment in Russia in 2022. The 35-year-old athlete, who was sentenced to nine years in a Russian prison after being arrested for possessing hash oil, described the struggle of writing the heartfelt note while confined in a foreign detention centre.

In a recent interview with David Greene on *Sports in America*, Griner discussed the difficult emotions she faced while crafting the letter. Recognising the gravity of their situation, she urged Cherelle to keep moving forward in life, even suggesting that if she found it hard to wait, dating someone new was an option. “I did tell her that,” Griner confirmed, reflecting on the weight of her words at a time when uncertainty loomed.

Griner revealed that the isolation of her circumstances made the letter particularly challenging. “I knew I’d be in prison for a long time,” she said, expressing the anguish of being unable to see her wife while incarcerated in Russia. “We could never visit each other… it just made everything so much harder.”

The former Olympic gold medallist went on to share the couple’s dreams of starting a family. She acknowledged that having children was a significant desire for them both, stating, “I know her plans. I know what we planned. It was just so much.” This insight into their aspirations reflected the depth of their commitment to one another amidst the turmoil.

In her letter, Griner asked Cherelle for one promise: that they would remain in contact throughout the ordeal. “I wanted her to promise me that she’d still be my friend, that she’d still write to me,” Griner explained. Griner was arrested in August 2022, after authorities discovered a vape pen containing hash oil in her luggage. Following four months of confinement, she was released in December 2022 after extensive negotiations led by the Biden administration, with Cherelle playing a crucial role in advocating for her freedom.

Reflecting on the moment of Griner’s release, Cherelle described it as a mixed bag of emotions. “I had thought about that moment a thousand times,” she told *PEOPLE* shortly after. “But I was overwhelmingly happy. It was the first time I was able to finally exhale, and I’m like, ‘Oh, thank God, this is such a great day.’”

In July 2024, the couple welcomed their son, Bash, who is now 22 months old. Griner recently shared insights into the joys of parenthood, stating, “It’s so rewarding. I come home, and he’s smiling. My day’s just good then.”
