Pelzer’s life took a dark turn when she entered into a relationship with Lewis after having already killed McLeod. Their relationship began in 2016, when Katie Long, who subsequently shared her experiences in the Netflix series, first met Pelzer online. At that time, Long was unaware of Pelzer’s haunting past, which included McLeod’s unsolved disappearance five years earlier.
Shawndell McLeod, a 35-year-old cook, was reported missing on September 25, 2011, shortly after a tumultuous breakup with Pelzer. The two had lived together in Conyers, Georgia, where it was reported that Pelzer had financed their home, but tensions escalated as McLeod sought to end their relationship. It was during this period that Pelzer’s controlling behaviour became evident, leading to widespread concern among their mutual friends, who noted her obsession with their split.
Police began investigating McLeod’s disappearance when she failed to appear for work or attend a family dinner. Their inquiry pointed to Pelzer, who claimed to have moved out and had not seen McLeod since their breakup. However, suspicions grew, and in a candid moment, Pelzer later confessed to Long that she had McLeod kidnapped and buried in a remote area in North Georgia, suggesting a premeditated act of violence that had gone undetected for years.
After marrying Rosalyn Lewis in 2016, Pelzer’s violent tendencies resurfaced. In January 2021, Pelzer was convicted of malice murder and aggravated assault in Lewis’s death, receiving a life sentence, albeit with the possibility of parole. In December 2023, having been found guilty of murder and felony murder in relation to McLeod’s case, Pelzer was handed a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
