A tragic accident claimed the life of a dedicated Massachusetts State Police trooper in the early hours of 6 May. Trooper Kevin Trainor, aged 30, was responding to a call about a wrong-way driver on Route 1 North in Lynnfield, just a minute after his shift was supposed to end. The call was made at 2:01 a.m., shortly before Trainor was set to commence his journey home.

Trooper Trainor had only recently graduated from the Massachusetts State Police Academy in 2023. Described as devoted to public service, he had established a reputation for his courage and readiness to help others in need. Colonel Geoffrey Noble, in a press briefing, highlighted Trainor’s selfless decision to assist despite being off duty, stating that he acted as anyone committed to public service would.
The urgent 911 report detailed a vehicle driving the wrong way on Route 1. As officers arrived in the area just two minutes after the call, the wrong-way driver collided with Trainor’s cruiser at approximately 2:04 a.m. Despite immediate medical attention and being transported to Massachusetts General Hospital, the trooper ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Colonel Noble expressed deep sorrow over the loss, emphasising the far-reaching impact of the incident on Trainor’s family, friends, and colleagues within the Massachusetts State Police. “To lose someone like Kevin in such a reckless manner is devastating,” he said. Trainor left behind his mother, Barbara, his fiancée, Jessica, and his siblings: Melissa, Matthew, David, and Steven.
The driver involved in the crash, identified as Hernan Marrero, 50, tragically did not survive the collision either. The Essex County District Attorney confirmed his identity as investigations into the accident continued.
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, who visited with Trainor’s family, shared her heartbreak over the incident. She acknowledged the trooper’s commitment to public service, remarking on how Trainor’s family included individuals also involved in public safety professions, such as a firefighter and a physician’s assistant. The Governor expressed her condolences and commended the Massachusetts State Police for their dedication in protecting the community.
In her statement, she noted the significant sacrifice made by officers who routinely confront danger to ensure public safety. “Massachusetts is mourning one of our heroes. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and fellow officers during this incredibly difficult time,” Governor Healey posted on social media following the incident.
Trooper Trainor’s time with the Massachusetts State Police was marked not just by his recent academy graduation but also by his role as a field training officer and his contributions to the Troop A Community Action Team. Before becoming a state trooper, he had started his career in law enforcement as a corrections officer in Essex County.
The Essex County Sheriff’s Department paid tribute to Trainor, stating that he would be remembered for his unwavering commitment to service, commendable character, and extraordinary bravery. Colonel Noble reaffirmed this sentiment, highlighting Trainor’s actions as instrumental in preventing what could have been a far worse outcome that night. He asserted that the trooper’s dedication potentially saved countless lives by intervening when he did.
