In a poignant story of resilience and hope, Sean Scanlon has shared the turbulent journey he and his wife, Zoe, have experienced following her breast cancer diagnosis just nine months after their wedding. At the age of 30, Zoe was faced with the devastating news that she had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer, which was labelled “incurable” at the outset.

The couple first crossed paths while studying at university in the UK. What began as a friendship evolved into a loving relationship, culminating in an engagement during a holiday in the Dominican Republic in 2022. Sean described the moment he proposed, expressing his elation at progressing to the next significant phase of their lives together. However, their joy quickly turned to heartache when Zoe discovered a lump while on a school trip shortly after turning 30.
Upon noticing a small 2mm lump located under her arm, Zoe promptly sought medical advice. Following a battery of tests, including a biopsy and mammogram, she and Sean received the shocking diagnosis of Grade 2 breast cancer. Sean reflected on the moment, stating that they could hardly fathom the gravity of the news they were facing. “Never for a moment did we think we’d find out the worst news of our lives,” he recounted, illustrating the emotional turmoil they encountered.

Tragically, the situation worsened when follow-up scans revealed that the cancer had metastasised to Zoe’s pelvis, further complicating her treatment roadmap. Metastatic cancer occurs when cancer cells travel from a primary tumour to other parts of the body, markedly reducing the odds of a successful recovery. Sean described that receiving this news felt like their world had crumbled, with their pre-planned future seemingly ripped from beneath them.
Undeterred, the couple embarked on an extensive treatment regimen, encompassing seven rounds of chemotherapy, hormone therapy that induced early menopause, and a suggestion for lifelong medication. Throughout this harrowing journey, Sean remained steadfastly by Zoe’s side, ensuring he attended every medical appointment and supporting her emotionally. He noted the vital role their family played in rallying around them, particularly since Zoe’s father is a cancer survivor with an inspiring story of overcoming his own odds.
After five months of treatment, hopeful signs emerged as scans revealed the cancer in her pelvis had dissipated. This improvement opened the door for Zoe to undergo a double mastectomy, a procedure initially deemed too risky due to the previous spread of cancer. Post-surgery, Zoe continued receiving care through radiotherapy and will maintain regular scans to monitor her health closely.
Today, Zoe stands cancer-free, although she remains on medication to mitigate the risk of recurrence. Reflecting on this newfound chapter in their lives, Sean expressed optimism about moving forward together as a couple. “Ultimately, we both feel like this is the start of a new chapter,” he articulated, already envisioning a brighter future.
In an inspiring display of advocacy, Sean participated in the recent TCS London Marathon, aiming to raise funds for Prevent Breast Cancer, the only charity in the UK dedicated solely to the early detection and prevention of breast cancer. His efforts were met with tremendous support, as he successfully raised nearly $100,000 for the cause. In his heartfelt commentary, he acknowledged the profound challenges they faced together over the past year and expressed gratitude for the generosity of their friends, family, and colleagues who stood by them.
Looking ahead, Sean and Zoe have ambitious plans to expand their family through surrogacy. “Now, we feel like we can finally start to move ahead with the married life we had planned,” Sean concluded. Their story serves as a powerful reminder of love, perseverance, and the indomitable human spirit in the face of adversity.
