On that fateful evening, Cole-Nottage was walking along a narrow pathway with her daughter and the family dog near the Esplanade. At approximately 8:03 PM, reports indicate that she slipped and fell onto the pathway. However, as she attempted to stand, she tragically lost her footing again and fell headfirst onto rocks that served as sea defences.
Witnesses to the accident attempted to assist Cole-Nottage but unfortunately to no avail. Two men who were present reported that they tried to pull her out from the rocks, with only her legs visible. Ian Jones, a passer-by, described seeing her “screaming and panicking”. Another witness, Alex Singleton-Dent, recounted their futile struggle to save her amidst the chaos.

Emergency services were alerted at 7:52 PM, but it was disclosed in court that the fire service did not dispatch a team until 18 minutes later. By the time help arrived, Cole-Nottage was unresponsive. The coroner later confirmed that the cause of death had been recorded as drowning, bringing a heartbreaking conclusion to the family’s desperate wait for answers.
Pathologist Raj Logasundarum provided additional testimony, revealing that Cole-Nottage was above the legal alcohol limit for driving at the time of her accident, which he stated would have “significantly impaired her cognitive abilities”. However, her partner, Michael Wheeler, maintained that she had not appeared intoxicated when she came home after dining out earlier that day.
According to Wheeler, she had consumed a few drinks at the Hatfield Hotel in Lowestoft before heading to a nearby pub. He remarked that when she returned home, she was acting normally and was not slurring her words. Around 7 PM, she set out to walk their dog, and with concerns regarding her delay, Wheeler recalled hearing a helicopter and the dog barking in the distance, raising his alarm further.
As the courtroom proceedings unfolded, Cole-Nottage’s family shared a poignant statement reflecting on her life. They described her as “bubbly, fun and full of life,” asserting that her joyful spirit could “light up any room.” The emotional impact of her loss has resonated deeply within her family, leaving a irreplaceable gap in their lives.
Legal proceedings surrounding the incident are ongoing, with Suffolk Coroner’s Court set to review further details related to the circumstances of the tragic accident. The community in Lowestoft has also been left in shock, with many expressing condolences for the family, who must now navigate a future without a beloved daughter, mother, and partner.
The local authorities and emergency services have faced scrutiny regarding their response times, as many are left questioning whether earlier intervention could have altered the outcome. Though investigations continue, the focus remains on honouring the memory of Saffron Cole-Nottage and supporting her grieving family through this difficult time.
