Mikayla Toney, a 20-year-old resident of San Diego, is preparing for a momentous first Mother’s Day, accompanied by her three daughters: Hazel, Sutton, and Everett. The triplets, now 14 weeks old, were born following an extraordinary and rare pregnancy that brought both challenges and joys to her life.

The triplets’ birth was the result of a spontaneous monochorionic triamniotic pregnancy, a condition that occurs in just one in every 100,000 pregnancies. This rare configuration means that all three siblings shared a single placenta, a situation that typically results in a high-risk pregnancy. Remarkably, Toney did not use any fertility treatments, nor do multiples run in her family.

Dr. Sean Daneshmand, a specialist in maternal-fetal medicine at Scripps Clinic, expressed his astonishment when he first detected the triplets during an ultrasound. With over 25 years of experience, he noted that such cases are exceedingly rare. “I couldn’t believe it until I went and scanned her myself,” he remarked, acknowledging the shock shared by both the medical staff and Toney herself.
Due to the unique circumstances of her pregnancy, Toney faced a range of medical evaluations. She underwent weekly ultrasounds to monitor the health of her babies. At 20 weeks, concerns arose when one of the triplets appeared to be falling behind in growth. By the time Toney reached her 28th week of pregnancy, she was admitted to the hospital for daily monitoring.
The triplets arrived at 32 weeks, each weighing just under 4 pounds. Hazel was born at 3 lbs. 14 oz., while Sutton and Everett weighed 3.9 lbs. and 3.8 lbs., respectively. Following their delivery, all three babies spent six weeks in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) where they received specialised care.
Reflecting on the experience, Toney acknowledged the unpredictability of her situation. “I just went into it very open-minded because I just had no idea what I was getting into,” she shared, highlighting her trust in Dr. Daneshmand and his guidance throughout the pregnancy.
Now home and thriving, the triplets have become a source of immense joy for Toney and her fiancé, Blake Hertz. To help distinguish between the three girls, the couple uses colour-coded bracelets, which have become a practical solution in their day-to-day life.
Toney expressed profound insights drawn from her journey into motherhood. “They’ve taught me a lot about having patience,” she noted, emphasising the transformative nature of her new role as a mother. This phase of her life is marked by significant challenges, yet filled with an abundance of love and learning.
As she embarks on her first Mother’s Day, Toney’s story serves as a remarkable reminder of the resilience and strength that can emerge in the face of life’s unexpected challenges. Her commitment to her children and her willingness to adapt reflect a profound connection reminiscent of many mothers, even under extraordinary circumstances.
