Fonda, who was wed to Turner from 1991 until their divorce in 2001, paid tribute to him through an emotional statement shared on Instagram. In her thoughtful reflection, she described Turner as a “gloriously handsome, deeply romantic, swashbuckling pirate,” revealing the profound influence he had on her life. She reminisced about how his affectionate nature transformed her perception of love and necessity, noting, “He needed me. No one had ever let me know they needed me.”

The actress, now 88, elaborated on their relationship, highlighting the support Turner provided that bolstered her self-belief and confidence. “Ted Turner helped me believe in myself,” she said, while acknowledging that she sought to provide the same encouragement for him. Fonda also pointed out that despite societal expectations for men to shy away from expressing vulnerability, it was this aspect that Turner’s character made him unique.
In her tribute, Fonda articulated the valuable lessons she learned from Turner, particularly regarding nature and wildlife, as well as the intricacies of business and strategic thinking. She reminisced about his exceptional strategic prowess, which was shaped by his academic interests and experiences as a sailor. “Ted was supremely strategic,” she remarked, noting his understanding of historical conflicts and strategies that added to his success in business.
Fonda conveyed that Turner was not only a formidable and competitive personality, but also one who played a pivotal role in her life. “Next to Katharine Hepburn, Ted was the most competitive person I have ever met,” she said, citing various lighthearted competitions they had shared. Their relationship, filled with challenges, was one she found rewarding and stimulating.
Reflecting on Turner’s impact, Fonda shared insights from a previous speaking engagement in which she credited him for the success of their mutual charity, the Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Power and Potential (GCAPP). “Had I not been with Ted, we never would have survived,” she shared emotionally, emphasising the lasting significance of their partnership.
Fonda and Turner first began dating in 1990 after her divorce from Tom Hayden, marking the start of a relationship that would attract substantial media attention due to the stark contrast in their backgrounds—she a liberal Hollywood star and he a conservative business tycoon. After just a year of dating, they wed on Turner’s expansive Florida plantation, merging their families into a new blended unit.
Despite their initial happiness, the marriage faced turbulence early on. Fonda claimed that just a month after their wedding, Turner had been unfaithful, a revelation that would complicate their relationship. Nevertheless, they remained together for several years before ultimately deciding to separate in 2000 due to their diverging paths.
Even after their divorce, the connection between the two remained amicable. Fonda once referred to Turner as “my favourite ex-husband” during a charitable event, showcasing the respect that continued between them. In a 2008 interview, she affirmed their friendship by stating, “I still have a very good relationship [with him]. Life is too short to be fighting.”
Turner is remembered not only for his entertainment ventures but also for his philanthropic efforts. He played a key role in founding CNN, the first 24-hour news network, and was instrumental in the development of the concept of the “superstation.” His legacy extends beyond the media industry, as he actively supported environmental causes and contributed to initiatives within the United Nations.
As the world reflects on Turner’s remarkable life and legacy, Fonda’s heartfelt tribute stands as a testament to the personal impact he had on her and many others.
