**Giant Squid Discovery Captivates Western Australia Researchers**

In an exciting breakthrough for marine biology, researchers have confirmed the presence of a giant squid in the underwater canyons off the coast of Western Australia. This fascinating find, which occurred during a study published by Environmental DNA in 2026, is captivating the attention of both scientists and the public alike.


Dr. Georgia Nester, the lead author of the study, shared insights about the discovery during an interview with WAtoday. “Finding evidence of a giant squid really captures people’s imagination,” she noted, while also indicating that this discovery is only one facet of a larger spectrum of biodiversity uncovered in the region.
The researchers conducted a thorough investigation of the Cape Range and Cloates canyons, situated near the Ningaloo coast, approximately 750 miles from Perth. Their study, heralded as the first extensive application of environmental DNA (eDNA) technologies in the area, involved collecting 178 water samples from depths reaching up to 4,540 meters.
The analysis revealed an astonishing array of marine life, identifying 226 species across 126 families within the canyons. Notably, this research uncovered 83 possible new records or range extensions for various species, including both the giant squid and sleeper shark. Significantly, the team also detected the faceless cusk eel for the first time in Western Australia, alongside the pygmy sperm whale and Cuvier’s beaked whale, both known for their deep-diving abilities.
Dr. Nester elaborated on the implications of the findings, stating, “We found a large number of species that don’t neatly match anything currently recorded, which doesn’t automatically mean they are new to science, but it strongly suggests there is a vast amount of deep-sea biodiversity we’re only just beginning to uncover.” She emphasised that the canyons had been largely unexplored due to the challenges presented by extreme depths. However, she highlighted the effectiveness of eDNA, explaining, “A single water sample can tell us about hundreds of species at once.”
The giant squid, known to inhabit oceans worldwide, remains an elusive creature, with individuals typically reaching lengths of up to 43 feet. Historically, the first live footage of a giant squid was captured in 2012, and prior to that, the species had been recorded just six years earlier. Though these creatures have been observed in diverse locations, including New Zealand and various Pacific islands, they are seldom found in tropical and polar regions.
Before this recent discovery, Western Australia had recorded only two sightings of the giant squid over the past 25 years. Dr. Lisa Kirkendale from the WA Museum remarked on the significance of the new finding, stating, “This is the first record of a giant squid detected off Western Australia’s coast using eDNA protocols and the northernmost record of them in the eastern Indian Ocean.”
