Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick recently faced scrutiny in a closed-door session with the House Oversight Committee, as questions from lawmakers centred on his past associations with the late financier Jeffrey Epstein. The testimony, conducted on 6 May, was met with considerable disapproval from Democratic members of the committee, some of whom characterised Lutnick’s responses as evasive and unconvincing.

During this private session, some representatives expressed outrage at the lack of transparency surrounding the proceedings. Arizona Representative Yassamin Ansari did not mince words, labelling Lutnick a “pathological liar” in reaction to his statements. Meanwhile, Virginia Representative James Walkinshaw accused Lutnick’s private appearance of being indicative of an ongoing cover-up regarding his relationship with Epstein.

California Representative Ro Khanna, who has been vocal in advocating for greater transparency in the Epstein matter, suggested that the private nature of the session clarified why there was no video recording of the testimony. He noted that Lutnick displayed a disconcerting lack of acknowledgment regarding inconsistencies in his history with Epstein, a point of contention considering Lutnick’s previous admissions about his interactions with the convicted sex offender.
Further compounding the issues raised, Virginia Representative Suhas Subramanyam reported that Lutnick claimed he could not recall the details surrounding a visit to Epstein’s private island. This visit has become particularly controversial following Lutnick’s earlier testimonial remarks during a Senate Appropriations subcommittee meeting held in February, where he detailed having lunch with Epstein on his island during a family vacation.
Despite his insistence that he had minimal contact with Epstein, Lutnick’s statements have come under increased scrutiny, particularly in light of new revelations from Epstein’s archives. Correspondence from these files suggests that Lutnick engaged with Epstein even after declaring he would cease all interactions following an initial uncomfortable encounter in 2005, where he and his wife were disturbed by the discovery of a massage table in Epstein’s home.
In an October 2025 podcast interview, Lutnick articulated his intention to distance himself from Epstein after that unsettling visit. However, documents have surfaced indicating that he nevertheless maintained communication with Epstein, as recent as 2018. An email coordinating Lutnick’s visit to Epstein’s island was particularly troubling for critics, as it contradicts his claims of severed ties.
Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland pressed Lutnick during his testimony in February, highlighting specific instances to which Lutnick had to admit he visited Epstein’s notorious island long after promising to cut ties. He described that the visit entailed, “lunch with Epstein,” while he was on a family holiday, yet maintained that nothing inappropriate occurred during the brief encounter with Epstein and their families.
Epstein’s island, known as Little Saint James, has been implicated as a hub for his alleged criminal enterprises, including significant financial dealings and sex trafficking. Nonetheless, Lutnick maintained that the only individuals he encountered during his visit were Epstein’s staff.
Given this conflicting narrative, calls for Lutnick’s resignation have increased, emerging from both political opponents and members of his own party. Republican Representative Thomas Massie expressed the view that Lutnick’s connection with Epstein warrants serious accountability, especially considering Lutnick had engaged with him after Epstein had already been convicted of serious crimes.
Massie further encouraged Lutnick to resign for the sake of simplicity and clarity in governance, asserting that the allegations surrounding Lutnick’s connections to Epstein were troubling enough to merit his stepping down from the position.
