In an incredibly heartfelt gesture, bride Emma Noake made the effort to recreate significant moments from her wedding day for her grandfather, George Lacey, who has been affected by dementia. This poignant event unfolded at Glenburnie Lodge, a memory care facility in Cardiff, following George’s inability to attend Emma’s wedding due to his declining health.

Emma had long envisioned her grandfather walking her down the aisle on her wedding day, a wish that unfortunately could not be fulfilled. “My grandparents and I have always been very close, so the idea of my grandfather being present and walking me down the aisle was something I always dreamed of,” Emma explained in a blog post from Dormy Care Communities, the organisation behind the care home. Sadly, as George’s condition worsened and he had to move to the facility, Emma realised that this cherished moment could not take place.

Determined to include her grandfather in her special day, Emma opted to bring the celebration to him. On April 24, she wed her partner, Lester Noake, during an intimate ceremony at a local registry office. The following day, they donned their wedding attire once more and paid a visit to Glenburnie Lodge to honour George and share heartfelt moments with him. They reaffirmed their vows in his presence, took joyful family photographs in the garden, and celebrated together as a united family.
The staff at Glenburnie Lodge played an instrumental role in making this event memorable. They transformed a private family room to fit the wedding theme and arranged a mini ceremony for the couple, which was attended by some of George’s fellow residents. The care home’s chef even prepared a beautiful, two-tier wedding cake for the occasion, enhancing the festive atmosphere.
The inspiration for this touching event was sparked during a visit to Glenburnie with Emma’s newborn son, Hudson, just two months prior. During that outing, she mentioned the idea of holding a small family celebration in the care home, and the staff took it upon themselves to elevate it into something truly extraordinary. “It’s lovely that the staff thought so highly of my grandad and our family. What they did for us was phenomenal,” Emma remarked, expressing her gratitude.
A particularly moving moment from the recreated ceremony was when the staff assisted George in walking part of the way down the aisle to accompany Emma. This act held immense significance for her and her family, as it allowed them to share an experience they had thought was lost due to his condition. Reflecting on the day, Emma said, “This will forever be such a special memory, and we are eternally grateful to everyone at the home for their kindness and support.”
Emma’s mother, Caroline Newman, echoed her daughter’s sentiments, expressing the emotions surrounding the event. “We cannot put into words how amazing it was — truly incredible,” she said. She acknowledged the emotional nature of weddings, stating that the absence of her father at the ceremony created a void. Nevertheless, she felt overwhelmed with gratitude that George was able to be a part of this special occasion alongside the family. “The memories we created on that day will be etched in our hearts forever,” she added.
Emma Watson, the director of Glenburnie Lodge, spoke fondly of George, highlighting that he was among the first residents when the facility opened in 2024. She acknowledged his popularity among the staff and other residents, noting, “When we learned about Emma’s wedding, we wanted to make it memorable. We are thrilled that she could share this precious moment with George and her family.”
This touching story serves as a testament to the power of family, love, and determination, illustrating how meaningful connections can be maintained even in the face of challenges like dementia. Emma’s creative efforts to celebrate her wedding with her grandfather will undoubtedly remain a treasured memory for all involved.
