Kaffer detailed her story, sharing that she first met her future husband while living in the same apartment building in Detroit a decade ago. Despite their close proximity, their paths did not cross significantly, and the pair remained acquainted only through social media. It wasn’t until 2018 that their connection deepened; following personal breakups, their casual exchanges transformed into meaningful conversations.

Recognising the growing bond, the couple began contemplating their unlikely romance, despite the miles that separated them. “We both wondered if we’d gone crazy; how could either of us be falling for someone we barely knew?” Kaffer mused, reflecting on the intensity of their early attraction.

With face-to-face meetings proving inconvenient due to the distance, they opted for a more practical solution: a $99 flight from Detroit to Baltimore, courtesy of Spirit Airlines. Kaffer recounted how her partner would make the long journey every other week to visit her and her son, allowing them to experience the sort of weekends many couples take for granted.

When her husband arrived, Kaffer felt an immediate thrill upon seeing him. “When I’d see his tall figure weaving through the crowd, my heart would clench with the still-new blend of ease and elation,” she recalled. Those low-cost flights facilitated a plethora of cherished moments—movie nights, family holidays, and even their first arguments, which they navigated together over the weekends.

As their relationship flourished, the couple began to envision a shared future. During one of his visits, Kaffer’s now-husband took the same Spirit flight he had flown many times before—except this time, he carried an engagement ring. He proposed shortly after landing, his excitement outweighing his plans for a grand gesture the next day.

“Our love story was supported by those flights,” Kaffer confirmed. In fact, Spirit Airlines was such an integral part of their journey that the airline was mentioned in their wedding ceremony 10 months after the engagement, even as flight prices steadily climbed to around £200, eventually leading to less frequent travels. By January 2019, however, Kaffer’s husband relocated back to Detroit, alleviating travel woes.

At their wedding, officiated by fellow Detroit Free Press employee Neal Rubin, the couple’s unique connection to Spirit Airlines was playfully noted. “It was love, I think it’s safe to say, and if you need one more thing to show you how real it was, every other week, sometimes more, [Kaffer’s husband] would fly to Detroit—on Spirit Airlines,” Rubin stated.

This ongoing decline culminated in its abrupt cessation of operations, leaving passengers concerned about their plans.
