A young German tourist, Brian Pethke, has returned to his homeland after suffering a life-altering injury during a diving trip in French Polynesia. The 24-year-old lost his lower right leg after being struck by an unmanned boat, a tragic incident that has garnered significant attention and support from the community as he embarks on a lengthy rehabilitation process.

Pethke was on a diving excursion in Rangiroa, an atoll renowned for its diving opportunities, when the accident occurred on April 5. Reports indicate that the boat, which was meant to collect divers from the water, became uncontrollable after a strong wave dislodged the captain from his position. With no one at the helm, the vessel veered towards Pethke and his diving instructor, resulting in severe injuries. While the instructor sustained a double fracture in one leg, Pethke suffered the loss of his limb.

A fellow diver, who identified herself as Gianna F., recounted the harrowing events leading up to the accident. She explained that she had befriended Pethke at a local diving centre prior to the trip. According to her statement to a Swiss newspaper, after the captain was thrown overboard, the boat began to spin chaotically and periodically charged towards the divers. In a moment of sheer terror, Gianna described seeing red in the water as Pethke looked at her in horror, acknowledging the severity of his injury.
Emergency services responded promptly, with police and the Joint Rescue Coordination Center coordinating the rescue effort. Pethke was subsequently transported to Tahiti, where he underwent surgery requiring multiple blood and plasma transfusions before his leg was amputated.
As Brian recovered, a friend, Lea Pallasch, initiated a fundraising campaign on GoFundMe aimed at supporting his rehabilitation and medical expenses. The funds are intended to cover a high-quality prosthetic limb, as well as necessary adaptations to his car and living arrangements. Pallasch highlighted the challenges Pethke now faces due to the loss of his leg, stating, “What many people take for granted is now a daily challenge for Brian…he wants his life back.”
The response to the GoFundMe campaign has been overwhelmingly positive, with over €27,000 raised towards a target of €30,000 as of May 5. Pethke has also taken to social media to document his recovery journey. In a recent post, he expressed his gratitude for surviving the incident and outlined the uncertain road ahead, including impending surgeries and therapies.
Expressing his determination, Pethke stated, “There will be many steps to follow, where I myself do not know yet where the journey is going. Nevertheless, I still want to take you along.” This sentiment reflects both his resilience and a desire to navigate the complexities of recovery with the support of his community.
Following a long flight back to Berlin, Pallasch reported that Pethke is doing well, gradually regaining his independence and continuing with his treatment plan. This tragic accident has not only altered Pethke’s life but has also drawn attention to the risks associated with water sports, even in seemingly safe conditions.
As he recuperates, Pethke’s experience is a sobering reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of community support in times of crisis. His journey underscores the need for increased safety measures in recreational activities and highlights the human spirit’s capacity to endure and adapt in the face of adversity.
