Two U.S. Army soldiers are reported missing in Morocco while participating in a joint military exercise, African Lion 2026. The incident occurred on Saturday, May 2, when the service members were on a recreational hike near the Cap Draa Training Area, situated close to the city of Tan Tan and the Atlantic Ocean.

According to initial reports from the U.S. Africa Command, the soldiers were hiking with a group of fellow service members to enjoy the sunset when one soldier fell into the ocean. Witnesses claim that attempts to form a human chain using belts in order to rescue the fallen soldier were unsuccessful. In a desperate move to help, another soldier leapt into the water but was subsequently struck by a wave, complicating the rescue further.

A third soldier attempted to assist but was unable to save his comrades. He managed to return safely to shore while the other two remain unaccounted for as search efforts continue. The U.S. military, in collaboration with Moroccan forces, promptly initiated a comprehensive search and rescue operation spanning ground, air, and sea.

As the search enters its fourth day, a U.S. defence official has indicated that additional resources, including a Boeing P8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft from Italy, are expected to arrive to aid in the search efforts by Tuesday afternoon, local time. The focus remains firmly on locating the missing soldiers and providing support to their families during this challenging time.
African Lion is recognised as the U.S. Africa Command’s primary and largest annual military exercise, engaging over 10,000 personnel from multiple nations across Africa, including Morocco, Ghana, Senegal, and Tunisia. This exercise is geared towards enhancing interoperability between military forces and improving readiness to respond to potential crises on the continent and beyond.
U.S. Africa Command asserts that the exercise works to prepare participating nations for cooperative efforts during emergencies, fostering partnerships designed to address a variety of challenges that may arise within the region.
In the wake of this incident, the command released a statement emphasising their commitment to the missing service members, highlighting that the welfare of the soldiers and their families is of utmost importance. The U.S. military and the African Lion forces have mobilised swiftly to locate the missing individuals, demonstrating a strong commitment to the safety of their personnel.
As the search persists, both the U.S. military and Moroccan authorities remain vigilant, coordinating efforts in hopes of bringing the two missing soldiers back to safety. The military community is rallying support, as concern grows among their colleagues and families, who anxiously await further updates.
This distressing situation serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks faced by service members, even during routine activities such as hikes and exercises. While many engagements focus on operational readiness and military collaboration, the safety of personnel remains a significant priority, and the military continues to uphold its duty of care to its members.
