Robert Irwin, the renowned wildlife conservationist and television personality, has recently shared an amusing yet unfortunate incident that occurred after he clinched the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy on “Dancing with the Stars.” Speaking to Jimmy Fallon on “The Tonight Show,” Irwin revealed that he broke his foot while practising one of his standout dances in solitude at home.

The incident happened shortly after the completion of the popular dance show. Irwin, aged 22, explained that he experienced the mishap while attempting to recreate a memorable jive routine in his living room. “Nobody knows this,” he jested, hinting at the secretive nature of his injury. “But it wasn’t actually on the show. This is after the season of ‘Dancing with the Stars’ ended.”
In his spirited explanation, Irwin reflected on the moment he chose to test his dance skills. Setting the mood, he played the iconic track “Born to Be Wild” by Steppenwolf, which he had performed during the show with his professional partner, Witney Carson. With enthusiasm and confidence, Irwin launched into the dance, describing himself as going “full HAM” around his home, only to abruptly collide with his stone fireplace.
The aftermath of the dance was both painful and embarrassing for Irwin. “I just slam my foot into the fireplace,” he recounted, describing the immediately regrettable moment. “I’m rolling on the floor, ballooned, like this giant bruise. And yeah, I broke my foot doing the jive in my living room, on my own. It was humiliating.”
Although Irwin adamantly claimed that “no one” knew about the mishap, his partner from the show, Witney Carson, was quick to point out the flaw in his story. Commenting under an Instagram post from “The Tonight Show,” Carson cheekily stated, “Love how you say ‘no one knows this’ you should have followed with ‘except for Witney.’”
This isn’t the first time Irwin has faced physical challenges while competing in the show. During the season, he had suffered a rib injury just before the finale. Despite the setbacks, Irwin and Carson triumphed in the competition, being crowned the winners on 25 November. Irwin expressed deep gratitude for the victory, which coincidentally occurred almost a decade after his sister, Bindi Irwin, won the same title.
He shared with PEOPLE, “To follow in those footsteps and to do the same has meant everything to me.” His victory on the show has been described as a life-changing experience, marking a significant milestone for the young conservationist.
Looking ahead, fans of Robert Irwin will not have to wait long to see him back in action on their screens. He is set to host “Dancing with the Stars: The Next Pro,” a spinoff series premiering in July. This new programme aims to discover the next professional dancer to join the ranks of the popular franchise.
Irwin expressed excitement for the upcoming show, stating, “For the first time in ‘Dancing with the Stars’ history, the greatest dancers will compete for a spot as the next pro. Let the fiercest dance battle begin.”
As the eagerly anticipated series rolls out on July 13 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC, Irwin continues to entertain and inspire audiences, demonstrating that the spirit of dance is as vibrant as ever, even amid the occasional injury.
