April Perri’s daughter, Lilly, is about to mark a significant life milestone: prom. Yet, for April, this celebration holds deeper meanings than just a typical teenage moment. Sixteen years ago, during her pregnancy, she was given devastating news about her daughter’s health, leaving her uncertain if Lilly would even survive.

When April was early in her pregnancy, medical professionals informed her that her unborn daughter had an unbalanced translocation of chromosomes eight and ten. This rare genetic condition had previously contributed to the loss of a pregnancy at 20 weeks. With no available precedents or community support, the prognosis was bleak. “The doctor urged me to terminate the pregnancy,” recalls April, “insisting that she would be stillborn.”

Defying all expectations, Lilly — short for Lillian — was born and has continued to thrive against overwhelming odds. Now a teenager, she remains unique in her medical condition, representing the only known case of her specific variant. Lilly is nonverbal and primarily uses a wheelchair, although she can walk short distances. Standing at 3 feet 11 inches and weighing around 54 pounds, Lilly has become a beacon of resilience, embodying a spirit that captivates everyone she meets.
“She is kind, patient and incredibly brave,” April explains. “There is no one who has met Lilly who hasn’t instantly fallen in love with her.” This incredible presence is something April has sought to highlight rather than diminish, pushing back against societal tendencies to underestimate those with disabilities. “I want people to understand through her clothes and her story how magical and adored she is,” she states.
As the prom invitation arrived, April’s thoughts immediately turned to creating a memorable experience for Lilly. With her background as a former fashion designer and boutique owner, she felt prepared for the task. Yet, she knew it would not be simple — Lilly’s distinctive size, which aligns more with that of an eight-year-old, posed challenges while shopping for appropriate attire. “But I was actually excited by the challenge,” she says.
The prom dress eventually chosen was embellished with butterfly appliqués, a symbol that resonates deeply with their journey. “Every milestone in her life is a thousand times more meaningful,” April reflects. The butterfly, often associated with transformation, joy, and hope, particularly resonates with their experiences throughout Lilly’s life.
Meanwhile, for Lilly, the joy of the prom dress manifests in simpler pleasures; she enjoys the flowy tulle and the way the butterflies sparkle in the light. “She loves the way it makes her feel like a princess,” April adds.
The upcoming prom is layered with emotional significance, particularly in light of Lilly’s challenging medical history. Two years ago, Lilly faced kidney failure, necessitating a transplant. In a twist of fate, April discovered she was a perfect match to become her daughter’s kidney donor. “She has been rejection-free for two years and is healthier than ever,” April reveals.
This backdrop of overcoming immense challenges gives the prom preparations an extraordinary weight. For April, witnessing Lilly reach this milestone feels nothing short of a miracle. “To see her experience such a huge moment and rite of passage is an absolute blessing,” she expresses. “I am so proud of how hard she has fought through her medical challenges. She’s stronger than ten men!”
April documents their experiences on social media, striving to offer a balanced picture of life with disability and caregiving. “I want to demystify what it’s like to live with caregiving and disabilities,” she elaborates. “People often view our lives as dark and depressing, but it’s quite the opposite — filled with joy, humour, and connection.”
The response from the online community has been overwhelmingly supportive, with many following their journey and even expressing interest in acquiring similar outfits for themselves. “Lilly loves everyone and she is so grateful for all the love and support,” April notes encouragingly. “If you see her out, just say hi!”
As the end of May approaches, excitement fills the air as preparations for prom continue. “We can’t wait to dance!” April exclaims enthusiastically. She hopes that by sharing their story, others may appreciate how unexpected life can be while still being full and beautiful. “Life isn’t smaller; it’s just different,” she concludes. “There’s magic everywhere — you just have to be willing to see it.”
